Toyota Reports Eighth Consecutive Best-Ever April Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., May 3, 2004 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported its eighth consecutive best-ever April sales of 167,129, vehicles, an increase of 10.1 percent over April 2003. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 631,850, an increase of 11.5 percent compared to the same period last year.
"The industry is benefiting from a healthy first-quarter economy," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "Despite rising fuel prices, economic indicators such as gross domestic product, employment and consumer spending were all up, giving a boost to April automotive sales."
The Toyota Division recorded best-ever April sales of 143,574 vehicles, an increase of 10.0 percent. The Lexus Division also reported best-ever April sales of 23,555 units, up 10.7 percent.
Toyota Division passenger cars recorded best-ever April sales of 76,515, units, an increase of 3.6 percent. Camry led passenger cars with sales of 34,467 units, up 5.1 percent over last April. The Prius gas-electric hybrid mid-size sedan posted best-ever April sales with 3,684 units, up 152.8 percent. Sales of the MR2 Spyder mid-engine sports car were up 13.0 percent.
Toyota Division light trucks reported best-ever April sales of 67,059, an increase of 18.4 percent. Sienna van led light trucks with a best-ever April of 14,203 units, an increase of 135.7 percent. Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) posted best-ever April sales with 11,044 units, up 15.5 percent. Land Cruiser full-size SUV sales increased 4.3 percent. Tundra full-size pickup, including the new Double-Cab, posted best-ever April sales with 8,672 units, up 15.7 percent. Tacoma compact pickup truck sold 13,231 units, up 3.6 percent.
Scion, the new car marque from Toyota Division, reported its third consecutive best-ever sales month with 5,721 units. The popular xB subcompact led Scion sales with a best-ever month of 3,825 units. The xA subcompact had best-ever April sales of 1,896 units. CYTD sales for Scion total 16,882. Scion is now sold in 24 states and will launch its national rollout in late June, coinciding with the debut of its third model, the tC coupe.
Lexus Division light trucks had a best-ever April with 11,982 units, up 8.5 percent. The RX 330 luxury SUV enjoyed best-ever sales of 8,227 units, an increase of 7.3 percent. The GX 470 mid-size luxury SUV sold its best-ever April with 2,930 units, up 9.6 percent, while the LX 470 full-size luxury SUV posted an increase of 17.0 percent.
Lexus passenger cars posted strong sales of 11,573, an increase of 13.1 percent. The ES 330 luxury sedan led sales with 6,460 units, an increase of 21.9 percent. The LS 430 flagship luxury sedan posted sales of 2,706 units, up 63.8 percent, while sales of the SC 430 hardtop convertible increased 4.5 percent.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 64.2 percent of total April sales.
