Round 16: Las Vegas, Nevada
May 1, 2004
K-Dub Hits Jackpot with Win in Vegas
In the city that never sleeps, the final round of the THQ/AMA Supercross
Championship kicked off in Las Vegas' Sam Boyd Stadium in front of 37,942
race fans. Amsoil/Chaparral Honda's Kevin Windham took the lead early on
lap one sending the sold-out crowd to their feet, and charged unchallenged
to his fifth win of the season. His teammate Mike LaRocco finished third.
In the 125 East/West shoot out, Team Honda's Nathan Ramsey made a
spectacular inside pass on Ivan Tedesco to put him on the box in the main.
Windham was hot right from the start, winning his heat race with a
10-second lead over 2nd place. Privateer-of-the-year, Damon Huffman, took
fourth in heat two on his Honda CRF450R, while other privateer Honda riders
also made the main with strong qualifying runs, including Craig Anderson
taking second in semi one, Subway Honda's Jason Thomas in third in semi two
and Red Rider James Povolny winning the LCQ.
The motto "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" couldn't have been truer
at the race, with the Amsoil/Chaparral Honda team receiving a one-race
sponsorship from the Hard Rock Casino that turned their normal red bikes
into a shade of purple for the final round. K-Dub's CRF450R can be seen on
display at the Hard Rock Casino throughout the year.
Windham, who started off the weekend by filming a cameo appearance in
"Supercross the Movie," was in complete control in Vegas, running a
blistering pace from the first lap that quickly left the field behind.
"Overall, this was a successful season for me even though I didn't win the
championship," said Windham. "This is my first year back in Supercross, so
I am happy with the way I finished." Teammate LaRocco got a fifth-place
start on his CR250R and moved his way up the field to have a brief year-end
battle with David Vuillemin before taking over third, where he rode
unchallenged to the checkers. Huffman finished eighth in the main and
second in the World THQ/AMA Supercross Championship.
With their strong showing in Vegas, Windham and LaRocco ended the 2004
Supercross season in second and third respectively.
In the 125 East/West shoot out, Nate Ramsey fought a tough battle with Ivan
Tedesco in one of the most exciting races of the year. Late in the race,
Ramsey made an inside pass stick, and pulled free of Tedesco to finish
third behind Stephane Roncada and race winner James Stewart.
The next race for the Red Riders is the opening round of the AMA Outdoor
Nationals at Hangtown in Sacramento, California on May 16. There, Mike
LaRocco, who has chosen to skip the nationals in 2004, will be missed.
However, Hangtown will also mark the return of Ricky Carmichael and his
debut on Honda's mighty CRF450R. This will be the first time in RC's
decorated career that he will be competing on a four-stroke, and it
promises to be epic.
