PERFORMANCE NIGHT AT THE VALLEY

TREMONT, HARKIN AND SANCHEZ TAKE CHECKERS ON MADSEN OVERHEAD DOORS / BOOMER’S
PERFORMANCE NIGHT AT THE VALLEY
By Ed & Betty Biittig
WEST LEBANON, NY - Kenny Tremont of West Sand Lake, N. Y. made the move on
Ron Dwyer of Bennington, Vermont on a lap 13 restart and went on to win his
104th career checker on the high banks of Lebanon Valley Speedway on Boomer
Performance/Madsen Overhead Door night.
In a post race interview, Tremont said, “competition is getting tougher. I
can’t believe I’ve won 104 features.”
Eddie Harkin was the winner in the Sportsman 20-lap main event. Danny
Sanchez won the 20-lap Pro Stock main event.
It was another great night for racing on the high banks of Lebanon Valley
Speedway and many fans came out to enjoy the warm night and the great racing on a
smooth and very fast track. Thanks to both Boomer’s Performance and Madsen
Overhead Doors who sponsored the night of racing and also added excitement and
money for the Pure Stock Dash for Cash and the Modified Pit Crew Challenge.
Andy Bachetti was picked as the wild card for the special Madsen Overhead
Doors eight lap Pit Crew Challenge. The event began with four laps of racing on
the track. The cars then pulled into the pits where the pit crews changed the
right rear tire. The next move for the cars was back onto the track in turn
one and around the oval to the finish line.
The line up of the cars at the line was then inverted by a draw from a fan.
Five was the number drawn. This moved Matt Quinn to the front, followed by
Whitehead, King, Dwyer, Bachetti and Sheldon. Another four-lap race netted Matt
Quinn as the winner and the recipient of $500 followed by Chris Whitehead who
was awarded $100 followed by Mike King, Ron Dwyer, Guy Sheldon and Andy
Bachetti that picked up $50 each.
Modified qualifying events wins went to Steve Hough, David Sanchez, Ron Dwyer
and Matt Quinn.
Saturday’s Pure Stock winners were Jim Hankey, Jason Casey, Chrissy Hilt and
Tom Harkins. This put them in a special Dash for Cash along with the 2003
co-champions, Pete DeFiglio and Pete Wiegand. The special four lap Dash was
sponsored by Boomer’s Performance in the memory of Robert “Boomer” Bedell and
awarded the winner of the event, Jim Hankey received $200, with $100 going to
second place and $50 to third through sixth.
The Rookie Pro Stock win went to Ron Jacobsen who survived two major mishaps
during the ten-lap event.
Qualifying wins in the Pro Stock division went to Chris Crews and Jay Casey.
Sportsman heat winners were Ed Harkins, Will Galm, and Frankie Harper.
Poover Daley won the Sportsman consolation event.
Thirty laps showed on the lap counter as the ground began to rumble with the
sound of 34 modifieds coming to starter Rich Rosa’s green flag, with David
Sanchez on the pole.
As the first lap was completed, Charlie Humes bobbled on the backstretch and
was clipped by the No. 244 of Chris Whitehead bringing out the yellow flag.
The second caution came out for Mike King who slowed in turn four. Ron Dwyer
grabbed the lead in turn one on the restart as Tremont charged to fourth from
his eighth place starting position. Before the field completed another lap,
the yellow flag flew once again when Stanley Wetmore and Eric Mack collided in
turn four. Wetmore continued but Mack was finished for the night. This time
on the restart, Sanchez led for one half a lap until Dwyer got by in turn
four and was in the lead at the line. As Dwyer pulled away from the field,
Sanchez still sat second followed by Steve Hough, Tremont and Rich Ricci, Jr.
Hearn sat in ninth and current point leader Heffner was 13th. As the field came
to the green once more and the leader came to the line, Tremont moved to
third.
On the next lap, Tremont took over second spot. As Dwyer and Tremont pulled
away the race continued for third. On lap 12, Donnie Corellis and David
Sanchez made contact and Sanchez ended up against the wall in turns three and four.
Corellis pitted for a look from the crew. The green came out once again and
Dwyer and Tremont were side by side at the line. As the two exited turn
four, Dwyer slide high and hit the outside wall. This dropped him back to fifth
and put Tremont in the lead. The caution flew for debris on the track. Hearn
and Heffner were now sitting seventh and eighth with a view of the action in
front of them. Ricci was now second with his sights set on Tremont and the
lead. Wayne Jelley sat third with Guy Sheldon and distant fourth. Heffner
passed Hearn for fifth on lap 20 and Hearn quickly came back to challenge the No.
74.
With five laps remaining the top three were several car lengths ahead of the
fourth, fifth and sixth positioned cars. Hearn passed Heffner for fifth and
on the next lap, Sheldon dropped out and Hearn moved to fourth. On the final
lap, Ricci moved under Tremont in turn four but was unable to make the move for
the lead. Tremont came across the line for the checker followed by Ricci,
Jelley, Hearn and Heffner.
The Sportsman 20-lap main came to the green with Kevin Lynch and Ed Harkin on
the front row. Twenty-four competitors sat side by side and when the green
flag flew Harkin took the lead. Chris Garrity shot into second but lost the
position in turn four when he slid up into the loose stuff. Garrity recovered
to drop in fifth. Harkins pulled away from the field by lap five and Galm was
the only one that had a shot at him. As the top five spread out the first
caution flew on lap ten and closed up the field for the restart. Galm closed in
on the restart and with only one more lap complete the yellow flew for the
second time in the event. The top five now showed Harkin in the lead, Galm,
Watson, Knipe and Garrity. The yellow flew once again and on the restart, Galm
moved in close to challenge for the lead in turn three. Harkin was able to
pull away on the frontstretch. Knipe, Watson and Collins were now in a heated
battle for the third position. Six laps remained with Harkin taking the green
once again on a restart with Galm still in pursuit. Knipe was pressuring Galm
for second. Goewey was now fourth and Watson fifth. With three laps to go,
Knipe moved into second spot followed by Goewey who moved by Galm for third.
Under the final yellow, an unidentifiable melee ensued on the backstretch. This
really shook up the lineup from the middle on back. As the race resumed,
Harkin led and came across the line for the win followed by Knipe, Goewey, Galm and
Watson.
The Pro Stock 20-lap event came to the green with Adam Haas and Jay Casey on
the front row. Haas pulled into the lead bringing Danny Sanchez with him for
second. Sanchez challenged Haas all the way down the backstretch. As the
leaders exited turn four several cars piled up behind them in a spinning frenzy
of racecars. Bill Lobdell, Jr. was towed to the pits.
As the green flew once again it was Sanchez in the lead. Robby Speed and
Buddy Hencke raced in second and third. The early leader, Haas dropped back to
eighth. Haas slowed and pulled into the pits on lap nine. Jay Corbin’s No. 8
brought out the next caution when it stopped on the banking in turn four with
a flat tire. Danny Sanchez led on the restart with Robby Speed still
challenging. Rob Yetman, winner of the first two weeks of competition, now sat in
seventh position.
On the restart, Speed challenged at the green. Yetman moved to fourth on the
backstretch at the halfway mark. As the race moved into the final five laps
Sanchez was still the leader followed by Speed, Hencke, Yetman, and Casey as t
he top five.
Yetman put the nose of his No. 7 under Hencke but couldn’t move ahead.
Hencke challenged Speed and Yetman stayed on the bumper of Hencke in the final
three laps but no one could get close enough to Sanchez to be in contention for
the win.
Action returns to the high banks next Saturday night when National Planning
Associates and Quandt’s Food Service sponsors a full night of racing with an
added Four Cylinder Demo Derby paying $400 to win. Little League players will
be admitted free if in uniform.
