Forum Available to Comment on Diesel's Supreme Court Victory
Who: Allen Schaeffer, Executive Director, Diesel Technology Forum 301 514 9046 (cell), aschaeffer@dieselforum.org Why: Today the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling striking down a local ban on the purchase of new diesel-fueled vehicles by fleet owners in the Los Angeles region. The decision reaffirms the principle that regulatory agencies should establish a level playing field for all types of engines and fuels -- insisting fairly that each meets the same stringent emissions standards rather than banning any particular technology. Today's diesel trucks and buses produce one-eighth the emissions compared to those built a decade ago. And by 2007, on-highway diesel engines will produce near-zero emissions thanks to clean fuels and advanced engine technologies that will result in a 99 percent reduction of PM emissions and an 87 percent reduction in NOx from current levels. Because of its superior cost- effectiveness, durability and performance -- coupled with its record of continuous environmental improvement -- clean diesel will continue to play a vital role in meeting California's energy, environmental and economic goals. What: The Diesel Technology Forum is available to comment on and provide context for the Supreme Court decision. DTF is a unique, non- profit organization dedicated to promoting clean diesel technologies. Forum members include engine and vehicle manufacturers; diesel fuel refiners; and emissions control and treatment system manufacturers. When: Please call to schedule an interview.
