While already working with multiple customer applications, Delphi Connection Systems, a business segment within Delphi Corporation , is introducing to the entire market an ExpressCard technology that's fully compliant with PCMCIA, a leading technology trade association. The PCMCIA standard was first introduced as Version 1.0 at the September 2003 Intel Developers Forum.
ExpressCard technology is being ticketed as the replacement for CardBus as the preferred solution for I/O technology add-ons to mobile and desktop computers. As a leader in the design and manufacture of connectors globally, Delphi Connection Systems worked along with a diverse contingent of system OEMs, card manufacturers and connector and component suppliers to create the standard. Other key developers included Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, Lexar Media, Microsoft, SCM Microsystems, and Texas Instruments, among others.
"We have been very encouraged at our continued developments in support of the highly specific needs of computing devices, and clearly the availability of our family of ExpressCard connectors further demonstrates our commitment to being the connector partner of choice in this market," said Kevin R. Heigel, Business Line Executive for Delphi Connection Systems, who noted that these connectors target next-generation computing systems utilizing PCI Express and USB 2.0 technology.
Capitalizing on the convenience and reliability of PC Card, the ExpressCard technology is differentiated by its smaller size -- approximately half that of the PC Card -- and its ability to offer faster performance and ease of use, giving notebook and desktop end users a quick, easy way to add greater functional capability to their systems.
Delphi Connection Systems' family of ExpressCard connectors will accept two sizes of modules (34mm and 54mm wide), both of which fully meet PCMCIA requirements. Each module is 75mm long and 5mm high. Delphi Connection Systems offers both the host and module connector in surface mount versions, and is also working on -- and is expected to shortly introduce -- its ExpressCard host connector solution with rails to ensure optimal alignment in all applications.
"Designing our connectors to the PCMCIA standard means they have performed successfully to robust testing requirements, such as high-speed testing, DWV, and 5,000-cycle durability," said Kirk Ulery, global market manager, Delphi Connection Systems. He noted that while the ExpressCard technology is primarily targeted at notebook and desktops, it may also be applied to hand- held systems, set-top boxes, and automotive, measurement and industrial applications.
Delphi Connection Systems is a member of PCMCIA, a non-profit trade association founded in 1989 to establish technical standards for PC Card technology and to promote interchangeability among computer systems. Already a feature in almost every notebook and palmtop computer, PC Card technology empowers users to configure systems and create unique, integrated solutions to meet their computing needs. Based in San Jose, California, the association has approximately 100 member companies worldwide. The PCMCIA also has a specification development and co-publishing relationship with the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) covering PC Card and Smart Media technologies.
