VPP STAR stands for Voluntary Protection Program, Safety Through Accountability Recognition. Being recognized as a STAR workplace signifies that TRW has an excellent safety and health program for its employees, and has reached the highest level of employee safety and health achievement recognized under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Achieving STAR status puts TRW in a very select group. Currently, there are over 100,000 employers in the State of Arizona, and TRW is one of only thirteen workplaces in Arizona to achieve the pinnacle of STAR recognition.

ADOSH adopted the VPP program to provide companies a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. Requirements for earning VPP status include a high degree of management support and employee involvement in health and safety; a high-quality worksite analysis program; hazard prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees.

Before approving TRW as a STAR participant, a team of specialists from ADOSH conducted a comprehensive audit to verify that TRW's management places a top priority on the safety and health of its employees, and that it is committed to providing a safe and healthful workplace for all of its employees. ADOSH's audit of TRW confirmed that there is a high level of management commitment to safety and health, and its employees are very actively involved in all aspects of TRW's safety and health program.
