Team Shelby Returns to the Winners Circle

DALLAS--April 21, 2004--The Shelby name returned to prominence in professional racing when Mike Ashley of Gotham City Racing drove a Pro Mod 1967 Shelby "Eleanor" G.T.500E drag racer to victory at the 17th Annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston on April 18, 2004. In only the second NHRA race for the factory Shelby car, Ashley quickly moved into first place and stayed there for the entire weekend, claiming victory for the famous racing name.

The Eleanor drag car is a modified version of continuation cars based on a vintage 1967 Ford Mustang. The G.T.500E and G.T.350SR are manufactured for Shelby by North Texas-based Unique Performance.

"We've returned the Shelby name to the top of the racing world," said Douglas Hasty, president of Unique Performance. "This G.T.500E, which is most likely the fastest and most powerful Shelby vehicle ever produced, is a fantastic car field by a superb team. The victory in Houston has propelled the Shelby G.T.500E into first place in the points standings. This is a great start to the racing season."

Before the race weekend began, Ashley was honored with a placard flag that flew over Camp Freedom in Baghdad, as well as over the U.S.S. Lincoln and the U.S.S. Nimitz on its voyage to Iraq. The flag was a gift to Ashley for his efforts to help boost morale among American armed service personnel. Ashley had responded to a letter from a U.S. Navy sailor who was a fan of the Pro Mod series by sending the sailor and his mates T-shirts, hero cards and autographed parts. This gesture earned the driver great respect from American drag racing fans halfway across the world.

"This was a weekend that I'll always remember," Ashley added. "I was honored that my efforts to help our brave men and women was so well received. I was deeply moved by the response. Then, the team captured the first victory for a factory Shelby car since the early 1970's, in Carroll's home state of Texas. This was a very important weekend in my life."

Ashley has been racing for Unique Performance's parent company, KHL Enterprises, since 2002. The Shelby Team was launched for the 2004 season with a percentage of all winnings going to the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation.

The Shelby legend is built upon success in just about every form of racing. Beginning his career in an East Texas drag race, Carroll Shelby captured numerous victories as a driver including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Due to a heart ailment, he retired in 1960 to build his Ford-powered Shelby Cobra sports car.
