GM Daewoo car tops U.S. safety test

GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. said yesterday that its Kalos subcompact passenger car received the highest scores in crash tests by the United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to the test results of "2004 Light Passenger Cars" posted by the U.S. traffic safety agency, the four-door sedan and five-door hatchback versions of the Kalos got the top rating of five stars in frontal driver and frontal passenger crash tests, the Korean unit of General Motors Corp. said. The Kalos cars are sold under the Chevrolet Aveo name in the United States.

The scores received by the Kalos are the highest among those by nine tested models in the same class, including the Toyota Echo and the Mazda Miata, according to the Korean carmaker.
