Terry Borcheller - Phoenix race
fitness test
Terry Borcheller's fitness regime paid off as he survived a physically
exhausting drive to finish 11th in the Daytona Prototype class in the Rolex Sports
Car Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. Borcheller, of Gainesville,
Ga., and Forest Barber of Fort Worth, Tex., were the first to be taxed in a
race slowed by seven caution periods.
Barber qualified the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Pontiac-powered Doran JE4 with a
lap time of 59.846 seconds on the 1.51-mile infield road course. He started
14th on the 40-car grid and was immediately tagged and spun in heavy traffic on
the first turn of the first lap. He dropped to the back of the field, but
recovered to 17th in class.
Borcheller took the wheel 18 minutes into the two-hour 45-minute race and
charged through the field to seventh in class at 1h44. His efforts were hampered
by a failed driver cooling system and contact with a GT car at 2h15, dropping
him back to finish 11th in class.
"It was one of the toughest short races I've ever experienced," Borcheller
said. "I know Phoenix can be hot at night, but it surprised me a bit. When
Forest got hit on the first lap and spun out, we got behind and I had to drive like
a madman. It didn't help that on that track, there is no time to rest."
three for three
Borcheller and Craig Stanton of Long Beach, Calif., won the Grand-Am Cup race
at Phoenix on April 9, their third victory in as many starts this season.
Stanton qualified the No. 44 TheRaceSite.com Racing Porsche 996 second on the
28-car grid in 1:08.534. He drove the first stint of the 2.5-hour race, staying
within one second of the race leader. Borcheller took over at 1h19, moved to
the race lead at 1h28 and finished 54.17 seconds ahead of the second-place car.
