Craig Stanton On Fire in Phoenix, Wins Third Grand-Am Cup
PHOENIX, Ariz., April 9, 2004 - Craig Stanton won his third-straight
Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport (GS) race tonight here at Phoenix International
Raceway (PIR). The victory makes a perfect trio of top-spots in the
series this season. The Long Beach, California resident qualified the
No. 44 TheRaceSite.com Porsche 996 second on the grid for tonight's
Phoenix Twin 200 race and then drove a smart race pressuring the leading
Nissan 350Z throughout the race's early stages. The pressure paid-off as
Stanton took the lead shortly before the half-way point of the race. He
handed the Nonnamaker family-owned Porsche over to co-driver Terry
Borcheller (Gainesville, Ga.) two laps later. Borcheller held on to the
lead bringing the duo their third race victory together. Stanton has
enjoyed a strong 2004 season in Grand American-sanctioned events with
four class wins, a pole position and two hard-charger awards.
Stanton starts on the pole position for tomorrow's Food City 250 Grand
American Rolex Series event in the No. 16 AASCO Motorsports Porsche 911
GT3 Cup. He will co-drive with David Murry in an attempt to win
back-to-back SGS class victories and a sweep of the Food City 250 race
weekend.
The GS-class race of the Grand-Am Cup Series will be shown at 6 pm (ET)
on April 18 on SPEED. The Food City 250 Rolex Series race will be
broadcast live on SPEED Channel at 9 pm (ET), Saturday April 10. The
Food City 250 can be followed online at www.grandamerican.com.
Craig Stanton: ""It starts back with the Nonnamakers. This is a really
seasoned team. They are very focused in this arena. The one-stop pit
strategy worked great for us. I think we stretched the fuel load about
as far as we could. In my stint, I wanted to put the car in the best
position I could for Terry so I was pushing the Nissan pretty hard while
trying to preserve our car. The Nissan was better on the banking but I
could keep the pressure on him. I wanted to burn him down and I guess we
did. Terry took over and put in a great stint and brought it home. It's
pretty unbelievable how this whole team rallied. Three in a row! That's
pretty cool! I'm really, really pleased for this whole effort."
Since moving from moto-cross/super-cross to automobiles in 1986, Stanton
has positioned himself as one of the premier drivers in sports car
racing. A desire to win in all kinds of machines has led to drives in
closed and open cockpit sports cars, sedans, NASCAR stock cars, open
wheel formula cars and midgets and in off-road competition. He has won
three championships and a Driver of the Year award in Sports Renault and
is the 1997 Speedvision Cup Rising Star Award winner. Stanton began
competing in the top echelon of sports car racing in 1999 and has class
wins in both the Grand-Am and ALMS. He takes his fitness training very
seriously with the goal of being the fittest race driver in the world
and has competed in 27 triathlons in his career. For more on Craig
