PAYNE, KELLY SCORE WINS AT MONTGOMERY MOTORSPORTS PARK

        MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Qualifying and time trials continued today at
Montgomery Motorsports Park for competitors in Comp Eliminator, Super
Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, and Top Sportsman at the
9th Annual Dixie Nationals, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car drivers ran all
rounds eliminations.
        Although Top Alcohol Funny Car only featured two cars, Jay Payne
won his second straight Southeast division Lucas Oil event.  Friday the
Claremont, Calif., racer was the No. 1 qualifier over Jeff Lancaster and
Saturday he took the win.  Payne's 5.670-second, 249.79 mph run was enough
to put him ahead of Lancaster's 6.182-second, 230.17 mph effort.
        In Top Alcohol Dragster, Guy Kelly, who was the best qualifier in
the class, held on for the win.  The Wadley, Ala., racer faced Michael
Gunderson of Middleburg, Fla., in the final.  Gunderson was the No. 2
qualifier.  Kelly made a stellar 5.372-second pass at 262.46 mph while
Gunderson slowed to a 8.835-second, 96.19 mph run.  The win moves Kelly to
first place in the division point standings.
        Mike Saye of Johnston, S.C., was the best qualifier in Comp
Eliminator.  Super Stock racer Bobby Dennis, Shorter, Ala., and Top
Sportsman competitor Ronnie Davis, Commerce, Ga., both maintained their No.
1 qualifying positions while in Stock Eliminator Jim Wahl, Deltona, Fla.,
took the pole. 
        Racing continues Sunday at Montgomery Motorsports Park.  Gates open
at 8 a.m. and eliminations start at 10 a.m.  Top Sportsman drivers will run
first round at 11:30 a.m.
