NHRA Saturday: KJ Will Roll Off Third in Las Vegas
Final Qualifying Results
Event: Fifth annual SummitRacing.com Nationals
Location: The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Las Vegas, Nevada
Day/Date: Saturday April 3, 2004
After persistent rain cancelled the first day of qualifying at the SummitRacing, com Nationals, racers returning to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday faced the challenge of having only two chances to make Sunday's field.
Further raising the tensions were the intermittent showers that postponed the start of the day's activities. However, Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Racing team quickly allayed any doubts of their intentions for race day, as the second-generation driver posted the quickest and fastest pass of the session at 6.857 seconds and 201.46 mph.
This pass remained his run of record when he recorded a 6.870-second elapsed time on his final attempt, and earned Johnson the third starting position for final eliminations. Despite the strong effort, Johnson was already looking for ways to further his Cavalier's performance.
"After the rain washed us out yesterday and cut us back to two runs, the biggest thing today was getting in the show, so we were pretty relieved after that first run. Overall, it wasn't a bad run, we just shook a little bit in low gear.
"In the second session, the ACDelco Cavalier made one of the smoothest and straightest runs I've ever made to the 330-foot mark, but it got loose down track and hit that bump in the right hand lane, After that, it was spinning the tires and out of control.
"Given the circumstances, we're pleased with today's performance. We're getting closer with every race, but we still have to keep working to figure a way to get more out of it."
