MIKE STALEY NAMED ASA/SMART TOUR DIRECTOR
PENDLETON, Ind. (April 2, 2004) - The American Speed Association has tabbed 54-
year old Mike Staley of North Wilkesboro, N.C., as the Tour Director of the newly named
ASA/SMART tour, a re-branded version of the former Southern Modified Auto Racing
Teams.
"I've known Dennis Huth (national director ASA Member Tracks) and Randy Myers
(SMART vice-president) for a long time," said Staley, a member of the national
motorsports commission. "They both thought I might be the right guy to move into this
role. I see it as something new, and an exciting challenge."
The ASA/SMART tour began its 15-event schedule on Saturday, March 27 at Caraway
Speedway in Asheboro, N.C. The races are generally 100 or 150 laps in length.
"I believe the association with ASA will be great for the future of the SMART tour," said
Staley. "It may begin a process of expanding the series a little farther out with its
geography. ASA/SMART tour is a really great product and I feel there is potential for
considerable growth. These excellent drivers and cars put on one heckuva show."
The SMART tour was founded in 1988 and features 600 horsepower, open-wheeled
Modifieds. The cars reach speeds of 125 mph. "The Modifieds have always been my
favorite show because they really turn it on," said Staley. "Plus, it helps that I'm
somewhat familiar with many of these tracks on the schedule."
Staley's father Enoch was the founder and longtime operator of the legendary North
Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway. Opened in 1946, the famed 5/8th mile track was purchased
in 1995 by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. and subsequently closed in 1996.
"It was heartbreaking to finally close the track," said Staley, former president of the
speedway. Staley took the title after his father passed away in 1995.
Staley and his wife, Arlene, have three adult sons, Shane, Michael and Johnny.
The American Speed Association is based in Pendleton, Ind., and has offered racing
