Cummins Westport Receives Order for 150 Engines From Beijing
VANCOUVER, British Columbia--April 1, 2004--Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI) today announced that it has received an order for 150 B-series natural gas engines for transit service in Beijing.Beijing Public Transportation Corporation, which currently operates more than 2,000 CWI engines in its transit fleet, has ordered the engines to be installed in buses manufactured by Beijing General Coach Factory in Beijing, China. The engines will be delivered in the second quarter of this calendar year.
As part of Beijing's commitment to clean up its air quality ahead of the 2008 Olympic games, the city has begun replacing its transit fleet with cleaner engines. Beijing's current transit fleet of 13,000 buses is expected to reach 18,000 by 2008. At that size, Beijing's transit fleet alone will be equal to 30% of the total transit bus market in the United States.
"This is a significant addition to Beijing's transit fleet and an important order for CWI," said Hugh Foden, President of CWI. "We believe this order is representative of the potential growth and expanding markets that China offers in the natural gas vehicle industry."
