Wi-Fi Service Available to Racegoers @ Texas Motor Speedway Camping Areas
SAN MATEO, Calif.--March 31, 2004--Tropos Networks, a leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale Wi-Fi networks, today announced that Outback Telecom of Flower Mound, Texas, has unwired the Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth, Texas, with metro-scale cellular Wi-Fi equipment from Tropos. The network, installed in just one day, has gone live and is providing wireless broadband Internet service for racegoers at the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Samsung/RadioShack 500.Outback Telecom selected the Tropos 5110 outdoor Wi-Fi cells to provide Wi-Fi service to more than 50,000 race fans who spend race week in more than 6,200 motor homes and recreational vehicles parked in the infield and around the perimeter of the track at the Texas Motor Speedway. These racegoers can purchase access for the Samsung/RadioShack 500 race week for $39. Using this wireless broadband Internet service, subscribers can check e-mail, conduct business, contact friends and family and use the Web to stay abreast of the latest racing developments while enjoying the week of racing and events leading up to the April 4 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup event. Users can access the network from anywhere within this temporary city of fans and are afforded unlimited mobility using their Wi-Fi enabled laptop computers.
"We selected the Tropos 5110 because access with standard Wi-Fi clients is a must for our service and we needed the fast, economical installation that the Tropos system offers," said John Mills, CEO of Outback Telecom. "In one day, we installed the Tropos Wi-Fi cells, made the network operational and were ready to offer service to users."
"The Tropos solution is perfect for this type of installation," said Ron Sege, President and CEO of Tropos Networks. "It offers the quickest way to roll out mobile broadband wireless Internet service for popular outdoor spectator events like the Samsung/ RadioShack 500. The Wi-Fi cells cover a large outdoor area, require minimum power and self-organize into an optimal network configuration that offers maximum performance and reliability with a minimum of installation cost and time."
The Tropos 5110 Wi-Fi cell, an outdoor-optimized and ruggedized node based on the 802.11 standard, uses the intelligent Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to provide pervasive, metro-scale coverage. The Tropos PWRP routes traffic wirelessly, effectively eliminating up to 95% of the wired backhaul requirements associated with traditional access point, or hotspot, solutions. The Tropos Wi-Fi cells form a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest throughput path to the wired gateway. This intelligent routing negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, backhaul failure, and traffic loads by selecting the best-performing route to a wired backhaul point. PWRP also scales to thousands of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry.
