March 24, 2004 -- Torrance, Calif. -- The 2004 Acura TL and TSX each earned the highest possible rating awarded during two recent independent frontal crash tests. Both cars received "best pick" and "good" designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Five Star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"We are extremely pleased that the TL and TSX are being recognized for their outstanding safety features," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. "These scores from the IIHS and NHTSA are acknowledgement of our commitment to developing industry-leading safety technology."

Both the TL and TSX received the Institute's highest ranking with an overall score of "good." Additionally, the 2004 TL was awarded the top score in every category tested including structure, restraints and injury measures. The rankings reflect vehicle performance in 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into a deformable barrier.

The IIHS ranks each of the vehicles tested with one of the following scores overall: good, acceptable, marginal and poor. A vehicle with a score of "good" indicates that in a real life crash at 40 mph, a driver using a safety belt would most likely be able to walk away with little or no injury. During recent New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) testing by NHTSA, the TL and TSX were given Five Star frontal ratings. In frontal tests, vehicles are crashed into a fixed barrier at 35 mph and given a rating of one to five stars, with five stars being the best. A Five Star rating means that there is less than a 10 percent chance of serious injury to the driver or front passenger during a frontal impact collision.
