Networkcar Wins EPA Clean Air Excellence Award

Technology helps reduce air pollution by remotely identifying vehicles with emissions problems

SAN DIEGO, March 23 -- Networkcar(R), a Reynolds and Reynolds company , announced today that the company has earned the Clean Air Excellence Award presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Awards Program annually recognizes and honors outstanding, innovative efforts that help to make progress in achieving cleaner air. Networkcar is one of 11 organizations selected from a pool of over 120 applicants across the U.S. to receive this prestigious award.

Networkcar was recognized for its development of remote smog check technology whereby an in-vehicle system continuously monitors a vehicle's emissions system and notifies car owners immediately if an emissions problem exists. In California, car owners with Networkcar may enroll in a special program to receive a convenient remote smog check. Networkcar has a growing patent portfolio that features 19 pending and issued U.S. patents surrounding remote vehicle diagnostics and wireless processes.

"We are thrilled to be recognized as a leader in environmental technology," said Networkcar President Dave Dutch. "We feel this technology is both convenient for the driving public and offers air quality planners a new tool to combat the growing air pollution problem. Our technology is particularly effective as an early warning system for high mileage fleet vehicles that are traditionally high polluters such as taxis, transit vehicles and school buses."

Networkcar's system collects and organizes detailed automotive information directly from a vehicle's engine computer and location-based information from a global positioning system (GPS). Maintenance and operation information is transmitted wirelessly to an information center where it is made available to car owners, automotive dealerships, and fleets in the form of immediate e-mail alerts, summary e-mail reports or easy-to-read Web pages. Networkcar's technology is compatible with virtually all cars manufactured since 1996 and trucks manufactured since 1988.

"I would like to extend my congratulations to the winners of the Clean Air Excellence Awards. Innovative and sustainable programs are a right and necessary part of our efforts to protect the environment and public health," said Mike Leavitt, EPA Administrator. "The Clean Air Excellence Awards recognize the pioneers in developing and implementing such programs. Again, congratulations to the winners of the competition as they lead us towards our goal of cleaner air for all Americans."

The Clean Air Excellence Awards program, sponsored by the U.S. EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, was established in 2000 at the recommendation of the Clean Air Act Advisory Committee (CAAAC), a senior-level policy committee that advises EPA on issues related to implementing the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Award-winning entries must directly or indirectly reduce pollutant emissions, demonstrate innovation and uniqueness, provide a model for others to follow, and offer sustainable outcomes.
