Autosport Development GTO - Sebring Wrap-up
The Day Ends Early for the Autosport Development GTO
Part failure shortens race but the team heads home very optimistic
Sebring, Fla – March 21, 2004 In its fist ever outing, the #5 GMAC
Commercial Finance / Trenton Forging GTO ended its day early in the
World Challenge GT race at Sebring. After minor contact, an already
suspect part simply let go.
“We have had concerns about the GTO’s street suspension and rear drive
components since taking delivery on the car(s),” stated Crew Chief, Rob
Wanamaker. “Well, we just had our suspicions confirmed. A rear half
shaft let go about 16 laps into the race, so we’ll just add that to our
list of things to reinforce.”
“We came down here to shake the car out thinking an actual race would
give us much better feedback than an independent test session.” Added
Wanamaker. “We were right…. this week proved to be the perfect
environment to really see what the car is going to need to be
completive. With the next race two and a half months off, we’ll have
more time to change the car than we had to build the car. And, I’m sure
we’ll do some testing between now and Lime Rock too.”
“I’m pleased,” added Stu Hayner. “We’ve put together an excellent group
of guys and a terrific program. We came here hoping the race would
provide a faster shakedown than we’d get by going out testing. It did.
We’ve learned so much more than we could have testing in a vacuum.
We’re going to go back and do some things that will get us the
straightaway speed we need and we’ll improve the handling. Then we’ll
go through all the components for durability. We really want to make
the car(s) reliable. But, all-in-all, shy of breaking prior to the
checkers, it was a successful weekend for us.”
