WASHINGTON March 19, 2004; The AP reported that the government is investigating the 2002 PT Cruiser after receiving seven complaints of sudden fires in the engine.

Two people have reported injuries because of the fires, including one driver who suffered head burns, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday. Six of the seven vehicles were destroyed.

DaimlerChrysler AG recalled 2001 and 2002 PT Cruisers in 2002 because their fuel pumps could leak and cause a fire. DaimlerChrysler spokesman Max Gates said Friday that it's too early to know if the two problems are related, but the automaker is analyzing the new incidents.

There are approximately 170,000 2002 PT Cruisers on the road, according to NHTSA and DaimlerChrysler.

NHTSA investigations can lead to vehicle recalls.
