Motorola Wins PACE Award for Automotive Electronic Innovation and Excellence
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., March 10 -- Automotive News has honored Motorola, Inc. with a 2004 PACE (Premier Automotive Supplier's Contribution to Excellence) Award in the Information Technology category for its VIAMOTO(TM) suite of location and services software. Motorola's VIAMOTO solution is a suite of server-based software that enables automakers to provide consumers with up-to-date map and navigation information compared to current CD-based systems installed in many cars today.
The Automotive News PACE Awards program, established in 1994, honors automotive industry suppliers who embrace innovation to adapt and reinvent their companies to meet the constantly rising performance standards set by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers). This prestigious program sets the bar for innovation and excellence, and has become a significant industry credential. The award was presented on Monday, March 8 at the Detroit Opera House. Motorola's VIAMOTO solution was selected from a field of 23 finalists that competed for this coveted award.
"The PACE Awards are one of the automotive industry's top supplier achievements, and we are proud to receive this high recognition for the development of VIAMOTO," said Marios Zenios, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola Automotive. "Motorola focuses on developing technology that provides innovative solutions for the automotive electronics industry, and VIAMOTO is one of those solutions -- created to assist drivers by providing them with up-to-date map information while on-the-go."
VIAMOTO is a suite of server-based location software that provides valuable, real-time, location-specific navigation and traffic information. It transforms data capable cell phones and other in-vehicle wireless devices into navigation systems (GOVIAMOTO(TM)), local information guides (FINDVIAMOTO(TM)), and mobile personal assistants (GETVIAMOTO(TM)). VIAMOTO has the capability to re-route drivers when they take a wrong turns, and deliver turn-by-turn instructions by literally speaking street names and maneuver prompts along the way.
Motorola launched VIAMOTO in 2003 through a contract with Avis Rent A Car System, Inc. "Avis Assist," a phone-based navigation system developed by Motorola, is available in more than 50 cities across the United States. Avis Assist allows customers to rent a Motorola VIAMOTO equipped cell phone with GPS and speakerphone capabilities.
