At the tenth annual Automotive News PACE awards ceremony in Detroit last night, Delphi earned two top honors in the Product and Information Technology Categories. With the recognition, Delphi has won at least one PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to Excellence) award yearly since 1999.
Delphi's Forewarn Back-Up Aid and Side Detection technology and Delphi's Horizontal Modeling and Digital Process Design for CAD/CAM each won an award for the Product and Information Technology categories, respectively. In addition, the company received an honorable mention in the Product-Europe category, for its set-top box for mobile TV reception.
Since 1999, Delphi has been awarded eight PACE awards, eight finalist plaques, and four honorable mentions. This year, Delphi was cited more than any other supplier.
"Being recognized with such a prestigious technology award is an honor for all of us at Delphi," said Donald L. Runkle, Delphi vice chairman, Enterprise Technologies. "It's a confirmation that we're delivering the best technologies to our customers."
PACE recognizes automotive suppliers who develop leading-edge practices in innovation to meet the industry's growing quality standards in the four categories of: Product, Product-Europe, Manufacturing Process & Capital Equipment and Information Technology & Services.
Delphi's PACE winning innovations: Forewarn Back-Up Aid and Side Detection
Delphi's Forewarn Back-Up Aid and Side Detection is an innovative derivative of the successful OEM BUA short-range radar system introduced in early 2002. A radar sensing system, Back-Up Aid helps drivers detect pets, children, vehicles and other objects when backing. It also aids in tight parking situations.
Forewarn Side-Alert is another innovative derivative of the same short- range radar system, and assists drivers prior to making lane changes and turns. It detects vehicles in the blind spot and alerts the driver. The system's 5-meter detection range is nearly three times longer than competitive ultrasonic systems.
Recognizing the immediate need for rear obstacle detection, side detection and parking assistance for new vehicles in addition to commercial and non- commercial vehicles already on the road, Delphi rapidly reengineered its OEM Back-Up Aid. This product adaptation enabled Delphi to bring each product to market less than six months after initiating their respective reengineering projects.
The Forewarn Back-Up Aid is now available, as Extended Parking Assist, on Lincoln vehicles, including the Lincoln Navigator and Lincoln Town Car, and as Reverse Sensing System on the Ford Expedition. It is also available as an aftermarket product.
Horizontal Modeling and Digital Process Design for CAD/CAM
Horizontal Modeling (HM) and Digital Process Design (DPD) is a patented and universal CAD/CAM methodology with broad application for all types of manufacturing. It facilitates the first true integration of product and manufacturing enabling major productivity and quality gains.
Today, CAD/CAM users must recreate the data every time there is a change. HM and DPD enable designers to use their existing CAD systems to create higher quality CAD data with independent features so that it is easier to change downstream, resulting in greater innovation in less time. In fact, HM completely eliminates the need to recreate CAD data throughout the entire product and manufacturing design cycle resulting in significant cost and time savings.
Delphi has over 25,000 product and process files using HM and DPD currently in production. By using these methodologies to eliminate the need to recreate, Delphi has seen a 20% reduction in the time required to create product models and a 65% productivity improvement in product design editing. Similarly, further downstream, process design has seen productivity improvements in the 50% range when creating models and up to 90% reduction in editing time.
There are 380,000 CAD/CAM users in the world from aerospace to graphic design, toys and electronics. Through its licensing division, Delphi is partnering with service providers, such as CADPO, to train CAD/CAM users on the new methodology.
The Delphi innovation receiving an honorable mention: Set-Top Box for Mobile TV Reception
In mobile MultiMedia, Delphi has become the first supplier to provide digital mobile TV reception. Many consumers currently enjoy analog in-car TV. But Europe is now transitioning to digital TV. As a result, many of these analog systems are becoming obsolete. Consumers who want to continue using their existing analog in-car TV while enjoying the new digital programming can do so through Delphi's technology. The reception system offers superb picture quality with digital transmission and MPEG data reduction.
