Rockwell Scientific Receives U.S. Department of Energy Funding for Advances in ``Smart Windows''
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--March 8, 2004--Technology Dramatically Reduces Energy Consumption for Climate Control in Buildings |
Rockwell Scientific Company LLC (RSC) has received a $1.2 million contract from the U.S. Department of Energy for the further development of RSC's reversible electrochemical mirror (REM) "smart window" technology.
This innovative technology gradually changes the reflective characteristics of glass, from a window to a mirror, thereby regulating the amount of light (and heat) that can pass through it. A type of 'electrochromic' technology, REM does not suffer from the inefficiencies of other currently available electrochromic applications, which can absorb significant amounts of heat. By providing exact control of light transmission, REM technology substantially reduces energy consumption for climate control/air conditioning systems. REM delivers substantial cost savings that will quickly repay the investment in the technology.
The primary objective of the DOE-funded project is to refine the REM technology for the commercial production of "smart windows." "Breaking down barriers to commercialization of REM technology will not only lead to reduced energy costs for businesses and consumers but will also help the environment by significantly reducing power plant emissions," said Morgan Tench, Manager of RSC's Electrochemical Processes Department. By licensing this technology to manufacturers for a wide variety of known and new applications, Rockwell Scientific will continue to lead the way in the development and commercialization of energy-efficient and environmentally responsible technologies.
