Telcontar Rich Map Engine Selected by Motorola for Navigation Solutions in Both USA and Europe; VIAMOTO and Trafficmaster Smartnav Benefit from Telcontar LBS Routing and Mapping Solutions
SAN JOSE, Calif.--March 5, 2004--Telcontar, a leading supplier of software and related services for Location-Based Services (LBS), today announced that it will supply its high performance Rich Map Engine to enhance Motorola's VIAMOTO(TM) solution. Motorola is also using Rich Map Engine in the UK to supply routing engine technology for Trafficmaster's Smartnav(TM).The Telcontar Rich Map Engine(TM) platform for routing, map management and address lookup, allows Motorola to provide users with superior navigation capabilities such as real-time turn-by-turn directions, guidance and fast dynamic rerouting based on current traffic conditions -- using one of the following:
-- Motorola's VIAMOTO: a suite of Location-Based Services that turns data capable mobile handsets into navigation systems and local information guides. Using a combination of GPS, Java(TM) and Location-Based Services technology, Motorola's VIAMOTO solution gives users the ability to receive spoken turn-by-turn directions to their destinations along with points of interest, all on a Motorola mobile handset. For example, a business traveler can receive directions from the airport to his hotel along with information on the closest coffee shop.
-- Trafficmaster's Smartnav: one of the leading navigation systems on the UK market. It is a call center based routing and live traffic service, which calculates the optimum route using Trafficmaster's traffic data. It continuously monitors the journey and will re-route the driver around delays, where possible. The driver simply presses a button on the dashboard and is connected to a real operator, who puts the destination into a Motorola central server. The route is then downloaded to the vehicle in seconds and with the benefit of GPS and voice technology, drivers are provided turn-by-turn directions throughout the journey. Motorists can also set up personal profiles and log regular routes via the web. Key automotive manufacturers in the UK, including Mercedes Benz, MG Rover and Peugeot, now offer this service as an approved option.
"Telcontar is very pleased to be working with Motorola in these ground breaking applications," said Eric Carlson, President and CEO of Telcontar. "Together, our technologies are transforming the cell phone into a very effective information appliance that we expect will see wide acceptance for traveler information, enterprise resource management, and general consumer applications."
Supporting the VIAMOTO and Smartnav solutions with Telcontar's fast and flexible Rich Map Engine-based spatial servers maximizes routing performance and ensures that the map and points of interest data are current. The client-server wireless architecture permits future integration of real-time data feeds such as traffic or weather. Additionally, the ability of the handset to monitor its own location and progress on the selected route permits it to disconnect automatically while navigating, minimizing airtime charges and the risk of disruption due to a lost connection.
