Windham and LaRocco finish on the podium at the Georgia Dome
Round nine of the THQ AMA Supercross Championship was hosted in the
hometown of sweet peaches, Atlanta, Georgia. The Georgia dome was fully
charged with 59,651 fans on hand to watch the stars of the series hit the
famous Georgia red clay for a night of action under the lights. Race fans
of all ages were on hand to see Amsoil/Chaparral Honda's Kevin Windham and
his teammate Mike LaRocco paint the podium Honda red.
Honda riders ruled the heat races in Georgia. Windham, fresh from a big win
the week before in Minneapolis, started the evening by winning the first
heat race on his CRF450R by a huge 8.946-second margin. Team Honda's Nathan
Ramsey had a solid run in the second heat, taking second place finish on
his factory CRF450R. LaRocco qualified with a fourth in the second heat,
taking him to his 199th career main Supercross event. In the first semi,
Amsoil/Chaparral Honda's Travis Preston won the heat and Red Rider Jason
Thomas of Subway/Honda took third, leading to semi two, where Moto XXX's
Damon Huffman took the win on his CRF450R.
Kicking off the main event, Huffman took the Butterfinger hole shot award,
followed closely by Windham. Going into turn one, however, Windham was
pinched off by another rider and ended up coming out of the first turn in
sixth. As the battle continued to rage in the back of the field,
Windham-racing in the dome for the first time since breaking his femur here
two years ago-put the bad memories behind him and made a run for the front.
"I thought about it a lot this weekend, especially when I walked the
track," said Windham. "But, when it comes to the race, I strap on my helmet
and don't have time to think about anything other than the race. I have to
put that behind me." K-dub worked his way feverishly through the lead pack
to finish a strong second. LaRocco did the same, charging forward to claim
a photo finish for the last spot on the podium. "I'm happy to be here,"
said LaRocco. "I didn't feel too good all day, and I did what I had to for
the points." Ramsey, who had a poor start, never recovered, and ended up
14th for the night.
In only his second 250 start of the season, Travis Preston was a force to
be reckoned with in the main, working steadily through the mass of riders
to finish an impressive fifth. Due to mechanical problems, Huffman finished
in 19th after only completing 10 laps.
In 125 action, Steve Lamson rode his CRF250R to a ninth-place finish in the
main. Lamson is currently third in points.
American Honda presented privateer James Povolny with a brand new CR250R at
the Georgia Dome. Povolny's Honda was stolen in San Francisco following the
THQ AMA Supercross at PacBell Field. "James has been a loyal Honda rider
and consistent performer," said Ray Blank, Vice President of American Honda
Motorcycle Division. "We are happy we can help him continue at a top level
of AMA Racing."
The Red Riders can be seen next visiting the Sunshine State of Florida. The
AMA Supercross makes its yearly visit to the famous Daytona International
Speedway for one of the most challenging races of the year. Ricky
Carmichael and Ernesto Fonseca, still on the injured list, will be on hand
to support their Red Rider teammates.
