KJ Starts Second at NHRA Season-Opener
Event: 44th annual Winternationals
Location: Pomona Raceway
Pomona, California
Day/Date: Saturday February 28, 2004
Kurt Johnson continued to power through his new ACDelco Cavalier's learning curve during the second day of qualifying for the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, CA. After securing a spot in Sunday's final eliminations with his 6.793-second run on Friday, KJ came back on Saturday morning to post the second quickest and fastest run of the session at 6.749 seconds with a top speed of 204.57 mph. This qualified K.J. in the second position, with the Georgia-based crew cautiously optimistic about their chances for race day.
"Although we're certainly pleased with qualifying second at the first race with our new ACDelco Cavalier, we still have some work to do. The way I see it, we have a couple of hundredths to make up, so we will be working around the clock on improving our performance.
"The important thing to keep in mind is that we only have 20 runs with this particular car, so we're still in the process of learning what it needs. Every run gives us more information, and we are slowly getting a handle on it. We're now at the point of having to tune the motor to match the chassis.
"Our biggest challenge for tomorrow will be to make sure this car goes from A to B on every run. If we're able to do that, and keep on moving forward, we should be in good shape."
