WJ Sits Fourth in Pomona on Friday

Friday Qualifying Results

Date: February 27, 2004
Event: 44th Annual NHRA Winternationals
Location: Pomona Raceway, Pomona, CA

With six days at their disposal, Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Racing team spent the time before the resumption of the season-opening NHRA Winternationals fine-tuning their Grand Am during a test session in Phoenix, AZ.

After posting the third quickest time on his opening attempt last Thursday, Johnson looked to climb higher in the standings on Friday. Although his 6.817-second, 202.73 mph pass was among the quickest in the less-preferred right lane, WJ's run of record remained his 6.781-second, 204.23 mph effort from a week ago.

"We tried a few things today that we had tested in Phoenix, and this particular motor didn't like it. We just ran it a little too lean, and it was almost three miles per hour away from where it should have run.

"We'll just go back and retrace our steps and try again tomorrow. Fortunately, since we had last week's run in the bank, today's attempt was not as crucial. Our GM Performance Parts Grand Am will be fine. Not only will conditions for tomorrow morning's session be better than today, but the afternoon session could also be better, because the racing surface will have improved as well. We'll just chalk this one up to our continuing education."
