Terry Borcheller - Homestead preview
champion at home
Terry Borcheller has a lot to offer his hometown crowd this week. Although he
collects his mail in Gainesville, Ga., he still considers Hialeah, Fla. (near
Miami) home. He returns this week carrying the 2003 Rolex Sports Car Series
DP driver title - his sixth professional race championship in as many years -
and a dozen wins in the last 10 months.
Borcheller will drive the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Doran-Pontiac in the Rolex
Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla., on Saturday, Feb.
28. He will again team with Forest Barber of Fort Worth, Tex., and Andy
Pilgrim of Delray Beach, Fla. They are looking for their second victory of the early
season, after winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Feb. 1.
"It should be fun having our first sprint race with this many cars [18] in
the same class," Borcheller said. "I'm looking forward to that!"
Borcheller has five previous victories at Homestead including three wins in
the Rolex Series, in the GTO class in 2000, GT in 2001 and SRPII in 2002.
banked speed
Borcheller believes a stable race car will be critical as the drivers adapt
to faster conditions in the reconfigured banked section of the 2.3-mile
Homestead circuit, which combines an infield road course and a banked oval track.
"Going into turn one should be faster because the banking is going to be
flat-out now," he predicted. "It's going to be really important to have the car
balanced under braking because you have a transition coming off the banking into
the infield, and now it's going to be faster. Our car is very stable under
braking. Jim [team owner Bell] does a great job balancing the car in every
direction, so our car will be very good."
testing en route
Borcheller will stop at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway en route to
Homestead. He will spend two days testing the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R
in preparation for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring endurance race in
March.
