Broadcom Supplies Johnson Controls With Advanced Bluetooth(R) Wireless Technology

Hands-Free Phone Calls and Other Features Now Possible Using Broadcom(R) Blutonium(R) Technology

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 24 -- Broadcom Corporation , a leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced that Johnson Controls has selected the company to supply the Broadcom(R) Blutonium(R) BCM2033 single-chip solution, a leading Bluetooth(R) solution used in automotive applications today, for its hands-free telematics systems.

Automotive manufacturers are adopting Bluetooth as a convenient, affordable way to bind together electronics systems within vehicle interiors, enabling the hands-free operation of mobile phones. The hands-free system developed by Johnson Controls allows the user of a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to initiate phone calls by voice command using electronics integrated in the car's audio system. Once the call is connected, the driver can then engage in a hands-free conversation, with the car audio system acting as the phone's speaker and microphone. Officials from Johnson Controls recently announced that the company is supplying the HandsFreeLink(TM) telematics system for the 2004 Acura TL sedan. Broadcom's BCM2033 was selected for this system.

"Automotive features, such as hands-free telematics systems, require components with high performance and reliability," said Larry Fieroh, Vice President and General Manager, North American Electronics for the Automotive Group of Johnson Controls. "Broadcom is an important partner for the system Johnson Controls supplies to automakers, providing the high performance Bluetooth device and the high quality manufacturing support required for the automotive segment."

The inclusion of Bluetooth in the automotive environment highlights the continued growth of the technology and its spread into mainstream consumer devices other than mobile phones and computer peripherals. Automotive manufacturers and their suppliers have become increasingly aware of the benefits that Bluetooth can provide at the same time that mass adoption of the technology in mobile phones has created a significant population of users who can enjoy those benefits. Broadcom worked closely with Johnson Controls to develop the system and optimize it for use with other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

"Bluetooth adoption by automotive and mobile handset manufacturers is creating a cycle that will ultimately provide greater convenience and safety to consumers who need to stay connected while on the road," said Scott Bibaud, Director of Marketing for Broadcom's Bluetooth products. "We expect the selection of our Blutonium product by Johnson Controls for their hands-free solution to help drive adoption of the technology and deliver the technology's benefits to an ever wider pool of end-users."

Blutonium Single-chip Radio a Leader in Automotive Applications

The HandsFreeLink system is enabled by the BCM2033, a single-chip Bluetooth radio designed to function particularly well in the harsh environmental conditions endured by vehicles. With consistently strong radio performance across the full automotive temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C, the BCM2033 has been adopted by several major car manufacturers for their wireless products. Automotive products based on the BCM2033 benefit from the fact that the chip is also widely deployed in cellular phones, enabling system development that is sensitive to the challenges of complex radio technology integration. In addition, the BCM2033 meets the very high manufacturing quality requirements of the automotive sector.

Blutonium products feature Broadcom's unique self-calibrating technology that allows radio circuitry to retune itself for optimal performance, making it an ideal radio device for use in automotive applications where environmental conditions can change frequently and quickly. High performance voice and audio fidelity are high priority features in cellular and automotive hands-free applications and are enabled by audio enhancement techniques built into the BCM2033.

Broadcom's Blutonium Bluetooth Product Family

Broadcom's Blutonium product family contains the broadest line of Bluetooth qualified components available, enabling high performance, short range wireless communications between devices and equipment ranging from PCs to PDAs, cell phones and other peripherals in the home and workplace. The Blutonium family includes the BCM2040, currently the only available system-on-a-chip solution for wireless keyboards and mice; the BCM2002 and BCM2004 radio-only devices; and single-chip integrated baseband and radio solutions, such as the BCM2035 and BCM2033. The BCM2035, BCM2033, BCM2040 and BCM2002 are currently in high volume production with several major cellular phone and other product manufacturers.

All of Broadcom's Blutonium products are supported by a full Bluetooth software offering and outstanding software support.
