Jamie McMurray Pilots No. 30 TRIMSPA Dodge to his Fourth Victory at Rockingham

MOORESVILLE, N.C., (February 22, 2004) --- Jamie McMurray continued his
dominance of the Busch Series at North Carolina Speedway on Saturday. McMurray
scored his fourth victory in a row at “The Rock”, driving the No. 30 TRIMSPA
Dodge. The victory was McMurray’s fifth career Busch win and first ever for Braun
Racing.
“I heard a statistic last night that said I had led 82 percent of
the laps in those previous races, but I really didn't think my car was that
good,” said McMurray. “I worked harder in this race than any other, because I
came from behind. I had the fastest car a couple of times last year in Cup
races but couldn't get the job done. At this race, things just seemed to go my
way.”
McMurray’s fourth straight Busch Series victory at North Carolina
Speedway ties him with veteran driver Mark Martin for most consecutive Busch
Series wins at a track. Even more impressive is the fact McMurray has won the
last three Busch Series races at Rockingham with three different race teams.
“I like coming here,” admitted McMurray. “I feel like I have a
pretty good handle on it. When I lie in bed at night and think about going to
certain tracks, I never know what to expect. When I think about coming to
Rockingham, I go to bed with a grin on my face because I look forward to coming
here. I drive as hard as I can every single lap. I don't baby the car or try to
save tires. If you could ride along with me you'd get freaked out. I couldn't
drive harder than I did just now.”
McMurray, who qualified seventh at the 1.1-mile oval, fell to as
low as12th by lap 50 as he fought a loose handling race car. By Lap 100 the
No. 30 TRIMSPA Team had made the necessary adjustments to bring McMurray back up
to third.
“In Happy Hour, I really thought we had a good car, but when
they dropped the green I lost about two laps,” said McMurray. “The car was
really loose. They adjusted the car a little more on every pit stop and by the last
stop we had the car to beat. I’m really happy for our crew chief Randy Cox.
This was his first race as a crew chief in the Busch Series. I hope I can
work with him in some more races this season.”
McMurray’s winning pass was set up by a 13.8 second pit stop by
the TRIMSPA Team under the fourth and final caution of the day for an accident
in Turn 3. On the restart McMurray sat second behind Kevin Harvick. As Harvick
struggled to pass the lapped car of Robbie Gordon, McMurray made his move,
diving to the inside of the race leader. For the final 20 laps, McMurray held
off a hard charging Martin Truex Jr. to secure his record tying win.
“Everyone's talking about how Mark Martin and I are the only
drivers to win four in a row here,” said McMurray. “If I can be compared to that
guy the rest of my life, I'll be in good company. He is one of the most
respected drivers in the garage area.”
