NHRA Saturday: Rain Postpones NHRA Winternationals
Event: 44th annual Winternationals
Location: Pomona Raceway
Pomona, California
Day/Date: Saturday February 21, 2004
Persistent rain showers, which had caused the cancellation of Friday's qualifying session, continued on Saturday at Pomona Raceway. With Sunday's forecast calling for even more precipitation, NHRA officials were forced to postpone the season-opening Winternationals in Pomona, CA. Action will now resume with the resumption of qualifying next Friday afternoon.
This delay, although unwelcome, could prove to be beneficial for Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Racing team, who are still coming to grips with the performance envelope of their new Cavalier.
"Although we would have preferred to run this race on schedule, the postponement could be a blessing in disguise for us. We were facing the prospect of having to race on a cold, green track with this new car for which we have limited tuning data, so we welcome the chance to have an extra week to work with it.
'We'd like to take advantage of this time to test, as every run gives us valuable tuning information about this new ACDelco Cavalier. Unfortunately, the same weather system that caused the cancellation here in Pomona is headed to Phoenix and Las Vegas, where we had planned to go. As ironic as it sounds, we're going to keep watching the weather to see where we can get oin schedule, the postponement a few laps in, so we can be ready to come back next weekend and take care of business."
