SmarTire Launches Second Generation Active Tire Monitoring Product for Motorcycles

New product featuring integrated receiver/display unveiled at Dealer Expo 2004 in Indianapolis

RICHMOND, BC, Feb. 12 -- SmarTire Systems Inc. today announced that it has launched its second generation active tire pressure monitoring system for motorcycles at the 2004 Dealer Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana. The SmarTire motorcycle product, featuring an integrated receiver/display is being demonstrated in National Cycle's booth (No. 913 and No. 919) at the 2004 Dealer Expo, Feb 14th - 16th.

SmarTire's motorcycle product is an active tire pressure and temperature monitoring system that provides real-time tire information to the rider while the bike is in motion. At a push of the button, the SmarTire system displays each tire's pressure, temperature and pressure deviation. If the system detects a loss of air pressure or abnormally high tire temperature, an ultra- bright warning light automatically alerts the rider to the condition.

"This new generation product includes a number of improvements designed for easier installation while also providing the rider with critical tire information such as pressure and temperature," says Tim Logsdon, Sales and Marketing Manager at National Cycle, a leading distributor of aftermarket motorcycle accessories. "The new SmarTire product both monitors and alerts the rider of tire pressure changes and even serves as an on-board tire pressure gauge. We believe that the SmarTire system will soon become a 'must have' for the safety conscious rider."

"We have incorporated feedback from customers, distributors, and dealers in the design of our new motorcycle product," says John Taylor-Wilson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for SmarTire. "This has resulted in a product that is substantially improved and provides more information to the rider at a lower price. As the recent legislation for low pressure warning systems on automobiles suggest, if tire monitoring is important for vehicles with four wheels, it is absolutely critical for motorcycles with only two."

The SmarTire system involves two components:

  - Sensors/transmitters mounted on the rim, inside the tire
  - A small and lightweight display/receiver mounted in view of the rider

Tire pressure and temperature information is transmitted wirelessly from the sensor in the wheel to the display unit. The display shows actual tire pressure and temperature data in a digital readout. A warning alert is triggered if a tire's pressure drops or if a tire's temperature rises beyond a preset threshold limit.
