McGarry Named PPG Vice President, Chlor-Alkali and Derivatives

PITTSBURGH--Feb. 1, 20040, 2004--Michael H. McGarry, general manager of fine chemicals, has been appointed by PPG Industries as vice president, chlor-alkali and derivatives, effective March 1. McGarry replaces David B. Church who is retiring the same day after more than 38 years with the company.

"Through his leadership and vision, Michael positioned PPG's fine chemicals business as a respected player in the pharmaceutical industry," said Kevin F. Sullivan, vice president, chemicals. "His leadership and knowledge of the business will serve him well in his new assignment."

McGarry, who earned a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Texas, joined PPG in 1981 as an engineer at the company's Lake Charles, La., chemicals complex. He progressed through a series of management assignments of increasing responsibility, including market development manager, silica products; operations manager, silicas, Thailand; business manager, Teslin sheet; product manager in the derivatives, chlorine, liquid and dry caustic soda businesses; and was named general manager, fine chemicals, in 2000.

Church began his PPG career in 1965 as an operations engineer at the Barberton, Ohio, chemicals facility. He progressed through a series of management positions, including operations superintendent, Barberton; operations superintendent, and later manager, Lake Charles; manager of PPG's U.S. chemicals plant operations; manager of marketing and sales, silica products; general manager, silica products; and general manager, surfactants. Church also served as director, commercial/product development, specialty chemicals, and general manager, packaging coatings, Americas, before being elected vice president, chlor-alkali and derivatives, in 2000. He is a chemical engineering graduate of Northeastern University.

"Dave's versatility as a leader and his business acumen made a significant, positive impact on our company," Sullivan said.

Luke M. Scrivanich, director of strategic planning for PPG's coatings business, will succeed McGarry as general manager, fine chemicals, effective March 1. Scrivanich has held positions in strategic planning and automotive original equipment manufacturer coatings since joining PPG in 2000. He earned a chemical engineering degree at Cornell University and a master's of business administration at Harvard.

Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries is a global supplier of chemicals, coatings, glass and fiber glass and chemicals, with manufacturing facilities and equity affiliates in 23 countries. Sales were $8.8 billion in 2003.
