OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Unveils LED Lighting Solutions on Key Ford Motor Company 2004 and 2005 Performance Vehicle Rollouts at Chicago Auto Show
CHICAGO--Feb. 2, 2004---- LED Lighting Provides Industry First: Instrument Panel Color Choices |
-- LEDS Also Offer Reduced Power Consumption and Meet Lead-Free Metallization Required In 2006 "Environmentally Friendly" Products
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors announced today that several of its innovative and high-performance surface-mount, light-emitting diode (LED) products will be included in key performance automobiles Ford Motor Company is introducing at the Chicago Auto Show, February 4-15. Ford's legendary GT, Cobra and Mustang models will integrate OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' highly efficient, single-chip white technology in the TOPLED(R) and Golden DRAGON(TM) LED packages.
These products optimize vehicle energy consumption, enhance the driving experience and provide unique styling opportunities in a robust SMT package. These products, as well as the complete TOPLED product family, are fully automotive-qualified with the Pb-free (lead-free) metallization needed for environmentally friendly products in model year 2006 and beyond vehicles.
"We are pleased to provide Ford Motor Company with the ability to integrate a dynamic range of LED lighting solutions for its vehicles," says Tom Shottes, vice president, North American LED Products, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. "Because LED lighting solutions reduce vehicle power consumption, extend the life and reliability of the product and are environmentally friendly, they represent a trend for a growing range of future applications."
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' products gained notice with these key performance automobiles when they debuted at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January.
Ford Mustang
Representing an industry first, the 2005 Mustang enables a driver to utilize OSRAM's red, blue and green LEDs to personalize the color of the automobile's instrument cluster. At the turn of a dial, the driver can select one of 125 different color backgrounds.
Multi-color LED solutions have been a trend in video displays and will continue to find applications in backlighting, LCD and illumination products. The next-generation, multi-color product is a 6-lead MultiLED(R) that enhances thermal-resistance and enables independent chip control in a single SMT package. OSRAM LEDs outperform previous LED designs because they can be arranged in closer proximity to each other and therefore achieve uniformity in color and light distribution with a high level of reliability.
Ford GT
Representing Ford's commitment to the latest in LED technology and energy conservation, the company's 2005 GT models utilize OSRAM's patented single-chip, white TOPLED LEDs in center stack electronics and cluster dial backlighting components. Working closely with Ford and component integrators, OSRAM has optimized color, luminance and cockpit lighting harmony so as to enhance the GT driving experience.
Ford Cobra
For the Ford 2004 Cobra's sophisticated front-turn signal lighting applications, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has provided the new, high-power yellow Golden DRAGON(TM) (LY W57B) LEDs. OSRAM's yellow Golden DRAGON LED, coupled through a light guide, provides turn signal function with a luminous efficiency up to 20 lumen/watt at 400 mA. The Golden DRAGON LED is a SMT product suitable for high-volume "pick and place" automation in a 1.8mm x 6mm x 10mm footprint because of its flexibility in packaging and design.
The next-generation Golden DRAGON, Advanced Power TOPLED, and Power TOPLED will include OSRAM state-of-the-art advancement in thin-film chip technology, which has demonstrated engineering record breaking efficiency of 96 lm/W at 20mA in 617nm color.
