DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., February 1, 2004 - The No. 7 PAP Parts/ Southard
Motorsports BMW-FABCAR of Shane Lewis ran as high as seventh in the 42nd
annual running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona before an engine failure, due
to overheating, ended his day. He was listed as ninth at hour sixteen.
The Jupiter, Florida-resident completed just over 14 hours of the
classic 24 hour endurance event, 359 laps, before parking the car.
Lewis' co-drivers were Jack Baldwin, George Robinson, Vic Rice and Steve
Southard.
 
Shane Lewis, about the reason out: "The engine overheated,
unfortunately. We were just bidding our time and we were starting to
slowly make our way back up through the pack. It's a real disappointment
for the whole PAP Parts/ Southard Motorsports BMW team. The car
picked-up a lot of debris during the race and it looks like a piece
punctured the radiator. So, we're parked. The team did a great job of
getting this car very good for us but it just wasn't meant to be. I am
mostly disappointed for the Southard team. This isn't the start we
wanted to the season but we'll put it all back together and head to
Homestead." 
 
Shane Lewis has been racing since 1989 with multiple race wins in
Grand-Am sanctioned events, in the IMSA Supercar and SCCA Pro Series and
the Historic SportsCar Series. He has starts in ARCA stock car
competition, at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and is a former Daytona
Endurance Champion and Formula Ford Festival winner. He has driven in
six Rolex 24s and three 24 Hours of Le Mans- leading the race in GT
class in 2003. He has two overall and one class-victory at the 24 Hours
of Nelson Ledges. Lewis was honored as the 1998 Professional Sports Car
Racing Rising Star award winner. Lewis also serves as a test driver and
private coach.
