UAW National CAP Conference February 2-4 in Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2004 -- More than 1,600 UAW political activists from across America will gather in Washington, D.C., on February 2-4 for the UAW National Community Action Program (CAP) Conference: "Fighting to Keep Good Jobs for American Workers."
On Tuesday morning, UAW political activists will join with activists from other industrial unions for the second AFL-CIO Industrial Unions Council (IUC) joint legislative conference. Immediately following the IUC conference, the union activists will go to Capitol Hill for meetings with members of Congress and congressional staffers.
Highlights of the UAW National CAP Conference are: Monday, February 2 Main Ballroom, Marriott Wardman Park 8:45 a.m. Keynote Speech -- UAW President Ron Gettelfinger 9:30 a.m. The Legislative Agenda -- Presentation by the UAW Legislative Department 10:30 a.m. Campaign 2004 -- Panel discussion and audience Q &A; panelists include Democratic strategist Debbie Dingell 2:00 p.m. Trade, Globalization, and Workers -- Harley Shaiken, author and professor, University of California, Berkeley Tuesday, February 3 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. AFL-CIO Industrial Unions Council (IUC) Joint Legislative Conference Main Ballroom -- Washington Hilton 11:00 a.m. Union activists depart Washington Hilton for Capitol Hill for meetings with Members of Congress and staff throughout the afternoon. 11:30 a.m. UAW activists speak out against President Bush's Medicare prescription drug plan and toss their AARP cards in the trash to protest AARP's support of Bush plan. Speakers include Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), and Bill Lucas, UAW Region 1C retiree and political activist.
