Modine Partners with Tennessee Department of Labor
RACINE, Wis.--Jan. 3, 20040, 2004--Modine Manufacturing Company , announced today it is the first company to receive funding through the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development for an incumbent worker training program. The state program has $1 million in funds available this year.Tennessee Department of Labor Commissioner James Neeley selected Modine- Lawrenceburg, TN for the $45,000 grant. Modine will invest an additional $34,000 in curriculum and training equipment for the project, which will include training on new quality technology for staff members and cross training for the hourly workforce.
"The Incumbent Worker Training Program provides grant funding for customized training for existing for-profit businesses," said Commissioner Neeley. "Through this customer-driven program, Tennessee is able to effectively retain and keep businesses competitive through the upgrading of skills training for existing full-time employees."
Greg Mansfield, Modine Lawrenceburg Plant Manager said, "We are committed to meeting our customers' stringent quality requirements, and to do that, we are constantly upgrading our quality programs and the abilities of our people. We have installed a major new computer-based quality module, and a large number of our people need to be adept in using this system. This grant will help pay for the training and will make our people an even more valuable resource to us."
"Also, we must meet our automotive customers' tight timelines for product shipment. Cross training ensures that a number of people in a product group are familiar with the equipment, quality requirements, and processes involved. This increases our flexibility, because we can move people between jobs as needed to keep production moving - balancing workloads and covering vacation time, etc. Cross training also makes the work more interesting and enhances the contribution each person makes here at Modine." Modine employs around 200 workers at Lawrenceburg, and nearly 8,000 worldwide.
Modine has also received an OJT (On the Job Training) grant through the South Central Tennessee Career Center, with $4,000 of the funds in place and the potential for a total of $10,000. The Career Center, part of the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development, provides employment readiness and training for workers and brings potential employees and employers together to fill job openings.
For the first six months, a portion of the OJT workers' salaries will be reimbursed by the Career Center. This will enable Modine to add new employees at a lower cost while they go through a training period to become fully productive. The workers benefit by receiving training that makes them valuable employees -- plus, they get paid a competitive salary during their on-the-job training.
"We enjoy a strong relationship with our local Career Center," noted Mansfield. "The Center offers a unique Key Train system where we can send job applicants for skills assessment. They tell us an applicant's skill level, then, as necessary, arrange training to raise that level to meet our requirements. We also rely on the Career Center for training programs to assess and enhance the skills of some of our existing employees. This helps us meet our business objective of having a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce."
"We greatly appreciate the efforts of the Governor's staff, the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development, the South Central Tennessee Career Center, and the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce in arranging these important programs."
