Dodge's Fernandez Picks Patriots, but His Heart Belongs to Yankees

John Fernandez, Director, Dodge Motorsports Operations, has heard all
the rumblings about the biggest NFL game of the year coming up on Sunday
in Houston, but he hasn't really had time to focus on Super Bowl
XXXVIII.

Fernandez is more interested in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Super Bowl
scheduled for Feb. 15, 2004 at Daytona International Speedway. Pushed to
pick a winner for Sunday's NFL shootout, Fernandez finally went with New
England, a bold pick since the Patriots are seven-point favorites.

"Super Bowl? To tell you the truth, I've totally lost track of
football," Fernandez said. "I've got to go for New England because I'm
from New York. I've been concentrating on all our motorsports
activities, and I have a tough time following anything other than racing
these days.

"All the Dodge North Carolina-based race teams will probably go against
me and stick with the Panthers, but I'm a New York boy. About the only
team I do follow any more, other than the Dodge race teams, is the New
York Yankees. They're not in the Super Bowl are they?"

So the Patriots get the nod over the Yankees in Super Bowl XXXVIII. What
about NASCAR's Super Bowl, Super Bowl XLVI on the 2.5-mile track at
Daytona on Feb. 15?

"The plate races are still so much of a crap shoot that it's hard to
say," Hernandez said with all the diplomacy of a New Hampshire primary
politician. "I do believe all of our teams have improved their
positions. I'll keep my fingers crossed that a Dodge will be there
first. But, to tell you the truth, if we had five Dodges in the top 10
I'd be just as happy as if we won."

Fernandez is obviously already thinking about NASCAR's new 26-10 road to
the 2004 championship.

"You need to get those points, and we need to have a bunch of people in
the top 10," Fernandez said. "The way to get there is consistency.
You've got to be in the top 10 for 26 races if you want to win the
championship or have a chance to win the championship after 36 races. If
you're going to be a top-10 car every week, you've got to start with the
first race. That just happens to be the Daytona 500."
