Quantum Awarded Contract for Asian Fuel Cell Bus Program

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 26, 2004 -- Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a contract from a major transit bus manufacturer in Asia to supply hydrogen fuel systems for the production of a fleet of fuel cell buses.

Each bus will incorporate seven Quantum ultra-lightweight, composite TriShield(TM) hydrogen tanks, pressure regulators and associated hardware, all integrated into a roof-mounted support structure. The Quantum hydrogen systems are certified to Asian, European, and U.S. regulatory requirements. The Asian bus manufacturer will operate these vehicles in commercial service on public streets.

"Our TriShield(TM) tanks have attracted significant interest throughout the entire transportation marketplace. Our lightweight advantage is very important to bus manufacturers because they typically install the tanks on the roof of the vehicle," said Alan P. Niedzwiecki, president and CEO of Quantum. "Our technology improves fuel efficiency, performance and handling of a bus when compared to buses equipped with heavier metal-based tanks. This is critical as most transit operators are trying to maximize ridership and are pushing the limits on allowable gross vehicle weight."

"We started providing tanks to bus manufacturers on a prototype basis back in 2001. This limited production program is an important step to establish our position in the early adopter market for hydrogen fuel cell technologies," added Niedzwiecki. "In addition, this program will provide the opportunity to gain real-world field test data, which is invaluable to the advancement of all of our hydrogen storage systems."

Quantum focuses on three primary product and system applications: Transportation, Stationary Power, and Refueling Infrastructure. The company manufactures both components and end products. In the Transportation sector, Quantum designs and supplies state-of-the-art fuel system technologies to many of the world's leading OEMs with Hydrogen systems for both Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Fuel Cell applications and Natural Gas and LPG fuel systems for internal combustion applications. For Stationary Power applications, Quantum currently supplies components and integrated systems to developers of fuel cell stationary power products and is working to expand its product portfolio in this area. In the area of Refueling Infrastructure, Quantum offers several hydrogen and natural gas refueling systems focused on early infrastructure development, targeting fleets of one to 20 vehicles.

Quantum's ultra-light weight composite fuel storage, fuel injection and metering technologies, electronic control products and OEM level systems integration capabilities have enabled the company to develop a product portfolio with state-of-the-art technologies and products, a diverse customer base, and strong alliances with partners such as General Motors and Sumitomo Corporation.

Quantum is a Tier 1 OEM supplier and a member of the GM Fuel Cell Alliance of fuel cell commercialization companies.
