Delphi Demonstrates Streaming Video for Mobile Applications at CES
Delphi and SIRIUS Satellite Radio Team Up to Show the Future of Video in Car
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 -- Delphi Corp. is demonstrating streaming video this week at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall, Booths #5206 and #5213). Using a SIRIUS Satellite Radio stream, Delphi is showing convention goers and media the future of receiving video in a popular full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) demonstration.

"The market has enthusiastically embraced satellite-based audio features, and streaming video is the next logical step in this evolution of vehicle entertainment," said Jeff Owens, president of Delphi Electronics & Safety. "Again, we are making sure that Delphi is prepared and ready to take advantage of the next wave of entertainment coming into the vehicle."
Streaming video was shown alongside audio programming in Delphi's demonstration vehicle with one stream offering video and the other audio. In addition, a new "favorite song" feature allows listeners to preset a currently playing song as a favorite. When a "favorite" is found playing on one of SIRIUS' 100 audio streams, the listener is alerted and given the option to tune to that stream.
The demonstration was shown in an SUV with 7-inch screens for the second and third row of seats. Each row can independently select from DVD, SIRIUS Satellite Radio or Video, or an available auxiliary port for video game systems or other audio/video electronics. For SIRIUS audio streams, the display shows song or program title, artist and the SIRIUS programming stream. Audio is provided using two-channel infrared headphones allowing selection of second or third row content in one set of headphones.
"Our mobile technology platform provides us with a compelling opportunity to provide both in-car audio and video to the new car buyer," said Joe Clayton, president and CEO, SIRIUS. "By teaming with Delphi, in-car video delivery for new cars is now a reality and can be easily integrated into car manufacturers' programs."
"Sophistication in entertainment is a strong demand in the market and we are staying ahead of the curve," Owens said. "When this technology becomes available to consumers, the best seat in entertainment will be somewhere in your vehicle. It will truly offer a huge number of content alternatives that will make traveling more exciting, productive and enjoyable."
Satellite radio has already revolutionized the vehicle radio business and Delphi has delivered more than 1.8 million satellite receiver units since the technology's introduction to the market two years ago. With satellite technology, motorists can receive more than 100 channels of digital clear broadcasting coast-to-coast.*
With more experience in providing mobile entertainment than any other manufacturer, Delphi has produced more than 250 million audio units since putting the first in-dash receiver in an instrument panel in 1936. In addition, the company has produced a long number of firsts in radio and pioneered many other automotive electronic innovations.
