Delphi's Wireless Heritage Paves the Way for New Connectivity Technologies

Delphi Connects the Home, the Office to Vehicle Entertainment and Information by Using IEEE 802.11g Technology

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 -- With more than 68 years experience in wireless communications, Delphi Corp. is expanding on its reputation of bringing new technologies to market by pioneering the benefits for 802.11g in vehicles. Delphi will demonstrate the use of the technology that allows audio files and other data to be wirelessly transmitted to and from the vehicle at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show this week (Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall, Booths #5206 and #5213).

"Delphi's rich heritage of bringing wireless firsts to vehicle manufacturers positions us well with 802.11g technologies," said Dr. Bob Schumacher, business line executive for Wireless at Delphi Electronics & Safety. "Our demonstrations will offer a glimpse of the future of wireless communications and some of the benefits and efficiencies that this technology will bring to bear. These technologies are really creating seamless lines between the road and home."

Wireless local area networks allow data to be transmitted at speeds up to 54 Mbps (megabits per second) over a range of up to 300 feet. The network can connect the vehicle's in-dash radio to PCs on a home network enabling users to download information.

Operating at 2.4 GHz band, IEEE 802.11g is an established wireless networking standard that eliminates the need for the wires that frequently connect computers. Network cards using the standard are available for laptop and desktop computers.
