Samsung Develops Scurry World's First Wearable Mouse
Seoul December 26, 2003; Kim Sung-jin writing for the Korea Times reported that operating computers without a keyboard or mouse but just by moving two hands in empty air as seen in many Hollywood films like "Disclosure", featuring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore, will soon become a reality.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics on Wednesday unveiled the world's first wearable and virtual input device called "Scurry". The company developed the product last October but has been keeping the product on the shelf due to difficulties in commercializing it.
Simply put, Scurry is a next-generation glove-like, wearable mouse that allows a user to punch in letters without a keyboard, scroll up and down and control a cursor.
When mass production is realized, Scurry will be manufactured in two types - a glove-type and ring-type. The virtual input device transmits the command signal to the computer by sensing the changes in the movement and angles of the fingers.
"Scurry is fit for portable PCs or wearable computers that users have difficulty connecting with and using the mouse. Since it also functions as a keyboard, users do not need any additional keyboard input device," said a Samsung Electro-Mechanics spokeswoman.
"But as the market for such wearable input device has not yet formed and since computer users are not forecast to use expensive wearable devices soon, it will take time for the exotic device to be fully commercialized," she said.
