Terry Borcheller - triple season for '04
triple threat
Terry Borcheller has locked in a triple race season for 2004. The
Gainesville, Ga., driver will compete in the American Le Mans Series, the Rolex Sports
Car Series and the Grand-Am Cup. The three series will include 30 races across
North America.
Rolex return
Borcheller will return to defend his Daytona Prototype championship in the
Rolex Sports Car Series, again teaming with Forest Barber of Fort Worth, Tex.,
in the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Doran JE4. Borcheller acknowledged a second
championship won't be easy.
"It's going to be extremely difficult next year, but we're taking steps to
make ourselves and the car better," he said. "Forest went through the Human
Performance International program, which is great. We know the competition is
going to be serious."
join 'em
Borcheller wants to beat his Grand-Am Cup rivals at their own game, using
their equipment. After finishing second to Joe and Wayne Nonnamaker of
Massillon, Ohio, in the 2003 Grand-Am Cup GSII class, Borcheller selected their
championship team to prepare his GS entry for 2004. TheRaceSite.com team will field
a Porsche 996 for Borcheller and series rookie John Krieg of Dallas.
"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!" Borcheller grinned. "John Krieg reminds
me a lot of Forest when he first came into the Grand-Am Cup. Forest has had an
immense amount of success and has been very happy with the progress. I want
to try to duplicate that with John, so we looked at a lot of different options
and a lot of teams. The Nonnamakers came out on top and we're real happy to
be running with them. If anybody can give us a shot at the championship, they
can. They've proved that."
top class
Borcheller will be racing for overall race honors as well as class wins in
both the Rolex Sports Car Series and the Grand-Am Cup. The Daytona Prototype
class will continue as the leading class in the Rolex Series, while the Grand
Sport (GS) class will move to the top in the Grand-Am Cup.
Borcheller acknowledged the value of racing in the Grand-Am Cup with a team
that is also a media partner, hosting TheRaceSite.com. "It's great to be
associated with a team that is into the media side of racing because it's going to
be really good for my personal sponsors," he noted. "K&N Performance Filters
and the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving are confirmed for
next year, and I'm anticipating involvement from Infinity2, Alpinestars and Bell
Helmets."
As announced in November, Borcheller will also contest the American Le Mans
Series GTS class, driving the ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R. Many believe the
GTS class will be the one to watch in 2004.
international off-season
Where does a champion spend his off-season? Borcheller goes to the track.
His travels this month included two races in the Dominican Republic and a
track day in Mexico City.
Borcheller joined Luis Mendez Racing for the final two races in the 2003
Dominican Republic Trans-Am series. He qualified his Riley & Scott Jaguar third
and finished third in the first race, which determined his starting position
for the second race. He was hit from behind during the second race, forcing a
pit stop for a tire change, but returned in a strong drive from the back of the
field to second place when his power steering failed. He finished fourth.
"Luis won the championship, which was the plan," Borcheller said. "The
second race was unbelievably fun and exciting. Going through the field was
awesome!"
Borcheller warmed up in a track day for the Saleen dealer in Mexico City,
thrilling clients and media with high-speed track tours. He also enjoyed a stint
behind the wheel of an Enzo Ferrari owned by the dealer principal.
"So much for the off-season!" he joked.
