Quantum3D Independence and AAgility Image Generator Solutions Selected by the U.S. National Advanced Driving Simulator
Quantum3D IG Solutions to Support United States' Premier Research-Oriented Driving Simulation Facility
ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 1 -- Quantum3D(R), Inc., a leading provider of open architecture, realtime 3D visual computing solutions for the Visual Simulation and Training (VST) and Embedded Visual Computing (EVC) markets, announced today at the Inter-service/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) that the National Advanced Simulator (NADS) at the University of Iowa has selected Quantum3D's Independence(TM) and AAgility(TM) Image Generation (IG) solutions for use in the facility's two major driving simulators. Both Independence and AAgility IGs are on display at Quantum3D's booth (No. 1350) at I/ITSEC, December 1st - 4th.
Under the terms of the contract, Quantum3D will provide the NADS with an Independence 2000 Series IG with multiple IV2-410 and IV2-210 channels to support forward, rear and side windscreen views, along with rear and side view mirrors and a "God's Eye View" for the primary NADS simulator. In addition, for the NADS Simulator Development Module, Quantum3D will provide NADS with an AAgility midrange IG solution. To support the NADS development efforts, Quantum3D will also supply the NADS with additional single AAgility channels and Mantis(TM) Realtime IG Software.
The NADS is one of the largest and most sophisticated research-oriented driving simulator facilities in the world. The NADS mission is to conduct research that ultimately leads to reductions in the number of traffic-related deaths, injuries, and incidents of property loss on the nation's highways. Located at the University of Iowa's Oakdale Research Park, the NADS is a national shared-use facility owned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the Department of Transportation and operated by the University of Iowa. "Our research is focused on understanding the human, machine and environmental factors associated with driving, along with their interrelationships-all of which affect safety on the road so that we may advise sponsor and client organizations on how best to improve it. As such, our requirements for performance, resolution and fidelity are very stringent and uptime of the simulator is of paramount importance when conducting experiments," said Dr. Yiannis Papelis, NADS Chief Technology Officer. "We evaluated a number of systems, and Quantum3D's Independence and AAgility systems provided the best compliance and overall best value among the systems considered."
Ross Q. Smith, Quantum3D co-founder and executive vice president of business development and marketing, said. "Being selected by the National Advanced Driving Simulator is a great honor for all of us at Quantum3D as well as a strong testimonial to both Independence and AAgility and their ability to meet the most demanding performance, fidelity and value proposition requirements around for ground vehicle as well as flight simulation applications. We are very proud to be working with the NADS and are pleased that our IG solutions are supporting the critical work that the NADS is doing to save lives and prevent injuries."
The NADS Primary Simulator requirements called for sustained 60 Hz performance with advanced image quality and hardware synchronization across multiple channels with differing resolutions. To meet these demanding requirements, Quantum3D Independence IGs deliver Clarity(TM) Full Scene Anti-Aliasing at resolutions up to QXGA (2048 x 1536) with Quatum3D's patented nVSync(TM) multi-channel synchronization that supports precision synchronization across up to 32 channels at resolutions from SXGA to QXGA.
"The cultural density and depth complexity of the NADS synthetic environments, coupled with the NADS' compelling need for extremely high image quality makes for a great proving ground for any IG," said Philip Guindi, Quantum3D IG Solution product manager. "Independence and AAgility are both able to sustain the NADS processing loads and still provide the image fidelity and visual acuity that has made the systems the open architecture IG of choice for precision training and mission rehearsal applications."
