Modine Opens New Assembly Location at Wackersdorf, Germany To Produce BMW Products
RACINE, Wis.--Nov. 2, 20031, 2003--Modine Manufacturing Company, a global company specializing in thermal solutions with its headquarters in Racine, WI, announced today the opening of its new plant in Wackersdorf, Germany. The 118,000 square foot (11,000 square meter) factory will supply engine-cooling modules for the new BMW X3 Sport Utility. In the future it will also produce products for BMW's other lines, including systems on the new 1-Series, the 3-Series, and the Z4.On Friday, November 21, dignitaries from across Europe gathered for an opening ceremony to take a look at the highly automated manufacturing process called "just in sequence." At first glance the location of the facility seems in the middle of nowhere. A closer look reveals four BMW plants within a 150-mile (300k) radius. Modine uses the "just in sequence" delivery to supply working modules from Wackersdorf to all four of the BMW plants.
The engine-cooling module produced at Wackersdorf consists of the following components from several of Modine's facilities: the radiators and charge air coolers from Pliezhausen, Germany, the oil coolers from Uden, Netherlands, and the condensers from Berndorf, Austria.
The new Wackersdorf plant will replace a smaller facility located nearby. The current facility opened six years ago, and this summer won the prestigious Global Excellence in Operations Award (GEO) for the category "Excellent Integration of Customers and Suppliers". The facility was recognized for its production of the engine-cooling module for the BMW 3-series automobile. Modine's existing Wackersdorf facility was the first Modine plant world-wide to use this highly advanced super lean production method. Modine then applied this process successfully at its plant in Toledo, Ohio.
Modine specializes in thermal management components, bringing heating and cooling technology to diversified markets. Modine's products are used in light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, HVAC equipment, industrial equipment, refrigeration systems, fuel cells and electronics.
