ASA Schedules Famed Venues Toledo Speedway and Indianapolis
Raceway Park In 2004
Pendleton, Ind. (November 18, 2003) - The 2004 ASA Racing Series schedule has
been completed with the final two pieces of the puzzle. The legendary Toledo Speedway
in Northwest Ohio along with the .686-mile Indianapolis Raceway Park will host the ASA
Racing Series for July events next season. The final schedule consists of 18 dates in the
37th season of championship stock car racing for the series that builds champions.
"The history established with ASA Racing at both Toledo and Indianapolis is among the
best of our traditional venues," said Joe Balash, ASA Operations Director. "We believe
these facilities have continued to update themselves and are located in significant
Midwest markets for ASA and our partners."
The ASA Racing Series makes its 18th trip to Toledo Speedway on Saturday, July 24. In
the 2003 appearance at the .50-mile oval, three-time ASA National Champion Butch
Miller scored the victory, after making a late-race pass on Florida hot shoe Travis
Kittleson.
ARCA president Ron Drager and Detroit-area businessman Roy Mott purchased Toledo
Speedway in January 1999. A track "facelift" undertaken quickly allowed the North
Toledo facility to regain its famed notoriety of being one of the best short tracks in the
country.
For a 25th occasion, ASA will compete at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The only event in
the state of Indiana during the 2004 season will be held on Saturday, July 31. In one of
the biggest stories of the 2003 season, Peter Cozzolino captured his first series victory
after completing a pass on Rick Beebe and then holding off a hard-charging Mike
Garvey.
In August of 1974, ASA first visited Raceway Park and since that time the series has
made 24 visits to the .686-mile oval. All-time ASA victory leader Bob Senneker has
scored six wins at IRP. Three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller has recorded
four victories, two-time Champion Dick Trickle has three wins with Scott Hansen and
seven-time champion Mike Eddy visiting the winner's circle on two occasions. Cozzolino,
Derrick Gilchrist, Gregory, Ted Musgrave, Johnny Sauter, Gary St. Amant and David
Stremme have each won one race.
Owned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) since 1979, Indianapolis Raceway
Park has been a staple of the American motorsports landscape since the legendary A.J.
Foyt won the first oval race there in 1961, capturing a USAC race on a dirt oval, the only
dirt race ever held there. The facility, which also includes the oval, a drag strip and a 2.5-
mile road course, has undergone major renovations, including new grandstands for the
oval track in 1999. Along with the weekly program, IRP hosts Kroger Speedfest during
August and the annual NHRA U.S. Nationals over Labor Day weekend.
