NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year
McMurray Continues Rookie of the Year Tradition for Havoline Racing
San Ramon, Calif., (Nov. 18, 2003) --- Havoline Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates marked history today as Jamie McMurray became the third rookie driver for Havoline to win Rookie of the Year. With NASCAR naming McMurray the 2003 Winston Cup Raybestos Rookie of the Year, every rookie who's driven for Havoline Racing in the past seventeen seasons has placed first in the rookie point standings. Driving the No. 42 Havoline Dodge, McMurray joins past Havoline drivers Davey Allison and Kenny Irwin as top rookies.
McMurray's consistent performance throughout the 2003 season garnered five top-five and 13 top-10 finishes, along with one pole. He finished 13th in the final NASCAR Winston Cup Series point standings. Capturing the Rookie of the Year title was a true team effort with a technically strong crew that depended on Havoline racing oil to stay in contention at every race.
"We greatly value Jamie's consistent performance as it's a quality that Havoline Racing strives to deliver through its people and products," said Craig Duncan, vice president, ChevronTexaco Global Lubricants (CTGL), North America. "Jamie's performance has also continued the tradition of great rookie talent for the Havoline team, which began with Davey Allison when Havoline first started in NASCAR in 1987."
"I think Jamie has definitely shown he is deserving of this honor," said Chip Ganassi. "He's a tremendous young talent in this sport and all of us at Chip Ganassi Racing and Havoline are glad to have him part of our team."
"Being Rookie of the Year tops off a great season with Havoline and Ganassi Racing, which have supported me fully," said Jamie McMurray. "Havoline has a wonderful history in NASCAR, and it's great to be supported by a team and company that really understands racing and competition."
With ChevronTexaco's continued support, Havoline Racing enters its eighteenth NASCAR season in 2004, which marks the 100th anniversary of the Havoline brand. Ninety years of auto racing experience has enabled Texaco and Havoline products to achieve many product breakthroughs and advancements during the last century, and ChevronTexaco is set to achieve new milestones in the years ahead.
