ECD Ovonics to Showcase Renewable Energy Solutions At International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy Conference

  * Bush Administration Convenes Meeting of Energy Ministers of 15
     Countries to Washington for Conference

  * ECD Ovonics Demonstrates Complete Portfolio of Renewable Energy
Generation and Storage Technology, and Offers Test Drives of Hydrogen-
     Powered Vehicle

WHO: Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD Ovonics) , the pioneer in hydrogen-based energy solutions, has technologies that fall into three primary categories: photovoltaic power generator, solid hydrogen storage, and rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. These energy solutions are available now and can be used instead of traditional hydrocarbon-based applications for power generation and transportation.

WHAT: The International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (IPHE) will bring together energy ministers from 15 countries to discuss common areas of interest in the hydrogen economy in the fields of research, development and demonstration projects, hydrogen policy and regulation, and the commercialization of hydrogen-based energy technologies. It will also provide a forum for the private sector and research communities to share information on the future of the hydrogen economy. The ultimate goal of the IPHE will be to enable consumers to have the practical option of purchasing competitively priced hydrogen-powered vehicles that can be refueled near their homes and places of work.

ECD Ovonics will demonstrate its complete portfolio of renewable energy solutions such as photovoltaic power generator and storage technology that brings hydrogen storage systems to both vehicles and refueling stations. The storage technology is a compact solid hydrogen storage system. The low- pressure, hydrogen fuel tanks are products of ECD's joint venture Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems LLC, and can also be used at refueling stations, allowing drivers to refuel their hydrogen-fueled vehicles safely and easily.

Texaco Ovonic Battery Systems LLC will also demonstrate its NiMH battery and United Solar Ovonic, a subsidiary of ECD Ovonics, will demonstrate solar energy solutions -- products that can generate hydrogen through an electrolysis process, mitigate dependence on conventional power grids and make a significant contribution to reducing emissions.

Additionally, Robert Stempel, ECD Ovonics' chairman, will participate as a presenter in a panel titled, "IPHE as Facilitator of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Markets - Stationary Applications." The panel features senior executives from leading hydrogen technology companies.

WHERE: Omni Shoreham Hotel - Washington, D.C. Booth #1

  WHEN: Tuesday, November 18, 2003 - Friday, November 21, 2003.
Robert Stempel's presentation (session C-2): Wednesday, Nov. 19 at
          2 p.m.

WHY: As alternative/renewable energy continues to be commercialized, it will undoubtedly account for a growing percentage of the nation's power supply. The Blackout of 2003 demonstrated the vulnerabilities of a conventional power grid and the need to adopt renewable energy solutions that can mitigate a future power outage disaster and, eventually, take significant pressure off the grid. ECD Ovonics technology and products are available now to provide uninterrupted power supplies for many commercial and consumer applications. These technologies have the potential to provide clean, long- term solutions and improve the reliability of the nation's power supplies.
