USF Red Star Driver in National Competitions, Earns High Honors for Safe Driving
NEWARK, N.J.--Nov. 1, 20037, 2003--Fern Richard, a driver from the Portland, Maine terminal of USF Red Star Inc. (www.usfc.com), recently competed in two national truck-driving championships and earned honors in both of them. In the National Truck Driving Championships hosted by the Safety & Loss Prevention Management Council of American Trucking Associations, Inc. (ATA), Mr. Richard placed sixth. In the U. S. Professional Truck Driving Championships, he earned fifth place. In order to be eligible for both events, Mr. Richard needed an accident-free driving record for at least one year prior to competing, as well as a win in his state contest."We are so proud of Fern Richard's accomplishment," said Bruce Kennedy, Chief Operating Officer of USF Red Star. "His dedication to his profession and terrific attitude about safe driving are a real asset to our company."
"I think it's important to stay sharp by competing. Safe driving keeps costs down for the company and it's good for business. I've gotten a lot of positive comments from customers about this," commented Mr. Richard of Lewiston, Maine. "The support I've gotten from Pat Gee, Brad Eagleston, and everyone in the Portland terminal has been great, too."
The ATA driving championship includes a written exam to test driver knowledge of safety rules, first aid, and firefighting; a personal interview to assess driver attitudes about the industry and enforcement agencies; a pre-trip test in which hazards and defects are "planted" on the driver's equipment and he/she must identify them in under 10 minutes; and finally, the field test in which the driver must demonstrate safe driving proficiency under various conditions.
Both the Maine State and U.S. driving championships included written, pre-test, and field course elements.
Mr. Richard chose to operate a twin combination vehicle during each of the driving contests, even though at USF Red Star he drives 5-axle and 4-axle equipment. "Driving different equipment forces me to practice harder and helps me stay in shape," commented Mr. Richard.
