Oxford Plains Speedway to host ASA Racing Series in 2004
Pendleton, Ind. (November 13, 2003) - The anticipation of the 2004 ASA
Racing Series season is due in large part to the number of racetracks that will
host the 36-year old series for a first time. Most of the new facilities are
superspeedways, although a notable exception is the Oxford Plains Speedway in
Oxford, Maine. ASA will debut at the track on Saturday, August 21 for a 250-lap
showdown.
The 3/8ths mile oval, with spectator seating for nearly 14,000, bills itself as
Maine's superspeedway and has long been one of the most popular venues of
its kind in the Northeast United States. With short straights and wide, sweeping
turns, Oxford Plains Speedway allows for close side-by-side racing all the way
around the racetrack.
"Bringing ASA's great short track reputation and history together with Oxford
Plains will be in some ways a motorsports milestone," said Joe Balash, ASA
Operations Manager. "This is a new market for ASA, but one that has proven
support for stock car racing. We look forward to our first appearance in one of
the nation's truly scenic areas."
Oxford Plains Speedway's history reveals that legends such as Richard Petty
and Bobby Allison have won races there. Along with an amazing background, the
facility remains up to date as the track surface was paved for the fourth time in its
history as recently as October of 2002.
"A series like ASA is the sort of top level racing sanction that we welcome to
Oxford Plains," said Bill Ryan, Speedway General Manager. "The caliber of
racing teams and drivers will make this race one of the best ever at our track. I'm
sure the fans here will support this wholeheartedly and it will be one of the
highlights of the racing season."
The entire 2004 ASA Racing Series schedule continues to be formulated with a
total of 18 events making up the expected final slate.
