Microtune and OASIS SiliconSystems Jointly Develop Reference Design That Accelerates Deployment of MOST-Enabled Car Radios
PLANO, Texas & KARLSRUHE, Germany--Nov. 1, 20032, 2003--Highly Integrated Reference Design Enables Automotive Customers to Easily Add, with Reduced Space and Cost, AM/FM Tuner Functionality to Their MOST Entertainment System |
Microtune(R), Inc. (Pink Sheets:TUNE) and OASIS SiliconSystems today announced the availability of a jointly developed Reference Design that accelerates the deployment of AM/FM car radios that operate in Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST(R))-enabled entertainment systems. Targeted to automotive manufacturers and suppliers, the RadioTuner 4 MOST Reference Design features Microtune's MT1384 AM/FM tuner and OASIS' OS88350 Radio Controller, combining the two companies' high-performance front-end and back-end technologies into a versatile, MOST-based AM/FM receiver.
The RadioTuner 4 MOST Reference Design is a highly integrated solution, packaged in a small form factor (61x138x31mm), that enables customers to flexibly support various automotive AM/FM system configurations, while delivering significant time-to-market, size, and price/performance benefits. The Reference Design is based on a two-chip solution, including the on-board OASIS radio controller and an AM/FM radio IC, providing for significant size and cost advantages compared to the three-to-five chip solutions currently available.
MOST: THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY'S NETWORKING TECHNOLOGY STANDARD
Based on a fiber-optic bus, MOST has emerged as the automotive industry's high-speed digital networking standard. It serves as the backbone technology of in-car infotainment systems. The use of the MOST networking technology permits carmakers and suppliers to easily add a host of multimedia devices, such as CD players, AM/FM radios, navigation systems, cell phones, and in-car PCs, as modular functions in the automotive environment, while meeting the specific requirements of any vehicle.
"OASIS is a founding member of the MOST Cooperation and is recognized as a leading developer of integrated solutions for this optical networking standard," said Barry Koch, Vice President and General Manager of Microtune's Transportation Electronics Business. "OASIS' strong market position, coupled with Microtune's industry-leading RF technologies and systems expertise, positions us to aggressively meet the requirements of our automotive customers as they migrate to MOST-based solutions."
"As global auto manufacturers adopt the MOST standard, they require one-stop technical solutions that deliver superior performance, low price points, and ease of implementation," said Herbert Hetzel, President and CEO, OASIS. "By working together, Microtune and OASIS can accelerate time-to-market for our customers by providing the means to deliver new classes of MOST-enabled applications and services."
RADIOTUNER 4 MOST REFERENCE DESIGN
The RadioTuner 4 MOST Reference Design offers a complete, ready-to-evaluate, customize and produce AM/FM tuner subsystem that integrates easily into MOST-enabled entertainment systems. It performs the processing necessary to implement an AM/FM receiver and to place its audio and data information onto a MOST network. Parameters, such as receiving frequency, can be set using control messages over the MOST network. The integrated MOST NetServices, a key component of the OASIS solution, provides the software services needed to communicate with other MOST devices.
As a key advantage, the Reference Design enables a remote tuner solution. The RadioTuner 4 MOST system can be mounted near the antenna, eliminating the cable losses of typical systems that have the tuner deployed in the dashboard head unit.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The RadioTuner 4 MOST Reference Design is available now and is priced at $990.00. ABOUT THE MICROTUNE'S MT1384 TUNER
Based on Microtune's field-proven AM/FM tuner technology, the MT1384 provides a highly specialized tuner subsystem for advanced automotive audio electronics. Implementing innovative agile filter adjustment techniques, the MT1384 analyzes the received signal and dynamically adjusts its filters to the best-suited configuration. This feature, together with excellent sensitivity, superior adjacent channel and multipath suppression, and an integrated AM noise blanker, allows the 1384 series to produce clear sound with minimal noise and interference, even in the most critical receiving situations. The MT1384 also supports the RF frequency ranges of the U.S., Japan and Europe, providing a compact, world-standard RF tuner that meets the high-end performance and quality requirements of global markets.
ABOUT THE OASIS OS88350 RADIO CONTROLLER
The OS88350 single chip contains two digital signal processors (DSPs) and full microprocessing functionality and is a one hundred percent MOST-compliant controller. The stereo decoding, the RDS/RBDS processing and the noise management is handled on chip. The chip enables alternative frequency track switching and is engineered to exceed the performance of standard radios. With these functions, the OS88350 is designed as a unique AM/FM receiver processor compared to alternative solutions in the market.
